On May 11, local time, Mr. Trump revealed a new policy to cut prescription drug prices in the US.
Writing on the social network Truth Social, US President Donald Trump said he will sign an executive order to put the new policy into effect at 9:00 a.m. on May 12 (8:00 p.m. on the same day, Vietnam time) to bring "fairness to America".
Accordingly, the decree will establish a "most favored nation" pricing policy to fix drug prices sold in the US at the lowest price that other countries pay for the same drug.
The "most-favored-nation" rule is a World Trade Organization rule that prevents discrimination between a country and its trading partners, creating equality for international trade.
Americans pay the most in the world for many prescription drugs, often nearly three times more than other developed nations.
However, Mr. Trump did not elaborate on the details and methods of the drug price reduction policy. He said that the reduction in prescription drug prices in the US would be offset by higher costs in other countries.
According to Mr. Trump, this policy will help reduce prescription drug prices in the US by 30-80%. "Our country will finally be treated fairly, and the health care costs of our people will be reduced by numbers never thought possible. And most of all, America will save trillions of dollars," he wrote.
This is not the first time Mr Trump has tried to lower drug prices in the US. During his first term in office in 2017-2021, he announced a similar proposal to cut drug prices, but the plan failed in the face of strong opposition from the pharmaceutical industry. At the time, his administration said the plan would save Americans more than $85 billion over seven years, cutting annual US drug spending by more than $400 billion.
Last month, the US president signed an executive order aimed at lowering drug prices by giving states more power to shop for bargains overseas and improving the price negotiation process.
