Previously, CBS News reported that President-elect Donald Trump's future administration could include people who worked with him during his first term, along with new figures. In particular, former Secretary of State Pompeo was named as a possible candidate to hold the position of Secretary of Defense in Mr. Trump's new administration. Republican Senator Bill Hagerty, former US Ambassador to Japan under Mr. Trump, is also expected to become the future US Secretary of State. However, Mr. Trump said on the social network Truth Social: "I will not invite former Ambassador Nikki Haley or former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to join the Trump administration that is in the process of being established." Mr. Trump added that the composition of the future administration is taking shape. According to CNN, Ms. Haley has faced Mr. Trump in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. She angered Trump but later endorsed him at the Republican National Convention in July. CNN reported that Trump, despite his calls for party unity, was unhappy with Haley, but several sources said he was not happy with her. Pompeo, meanwhile, has considered running for president in 2024 but has never formally run against Trump. Multiple sources close to Trump said Pompeo did a good job as secretary of state during Trump's first term. However, the relationship between Trump and Pompeo has deteriorated in the years since his term. Pompeo appeared to criticize Trump in a speech last year when he urged Republican voters to avoid "leaders known for their fragile egos."
In recent days as he forms his new administration, Trump has questioned Pompeo's loyalty and whether he can be trusted to carry out his agenda. In a related development, some media outlets have speculated that former US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is the candidate for Treasury Secretary. However, Reuters, citing its own sources, has denied that Lighthizer has been offered the job. Trump, who won the presidential election on November 5, became the first US politician since the 19th century to return to the White House after a four-year hiatus. According to Reuters, Trump is meeting with potential candidates to form a new administration before his inauguration on January 20, 2025. This weekend, he met with prominent investor Scott Bessent, who is likely to be nominated for Treasury Secretary.
