Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha - Director of the Institute of Oceanography was honored to receive the Kovalevskaia Award.

On the afternoon of March 7, at the Government Office, under the authorization of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai presented the 2023 Kovalevskaia Prize to two female scientists with outstanding achievements in scientific research. The two awardees are: Prof. Dr. Hoang Thi Thai Hoa - University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha - Director of the Institute of Oceanography, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

A pioneer in marine toxins and food safety research in Vietnam and the Western Pacific region, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha has spent 30 years pursuing this field. To date, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha has chaired 6 scientific research topics at the State and Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology levels; published 104 scientific articles, including 41 articles published in prestigious international journals. In addition, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha is also the main author of 1 useful solution, 1 monograph and 1 bilingual monograph chapter on marine toxins and food safety research. The research results of Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha and the research team have contributed to serving social security through the widespread dissemination of knowledge through leaflets, wall paintings and direct television interviews to minimize the risk to public health from poisonous marine animals in Vietnam. The above results also contribute to the sustainable development of the marine economy by providing a scientific basis for monitoring seafood quality and supporting businesses in enhancing the reputation of exported seafood products.

In addition, in his role as Head of the Department of Marine Science and Technology of the Academy of Science and Technology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha directed and coordinated training on marine science and technology for provinces and cities in the Central and Central Highlands regions; was a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo, Japan and a visiting lecturer at the Vietnam People's Navy Command. The international activities of Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha in the positions of Chairman of the Vietnam Intergovernmental Committee on Oceanography, member of the Legal and Technical Committee of the Seabed Authority have contributed to enhancing the image and position of Vietnam internationally and protecting national security, sovereignty and interests at sea.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha is the only female director out of 16 directors of the Institute of Oceanography since its establishment in 1922. As Director of the Institute of Oceanography, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha has provided directions and led the unit in scientific research, in building potential and training human resources... achieving many emulation titles and forms of commendation at the State and Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology levels. Before receiving the Kovalevskaia Award, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha was awarded Certificates of Merit by the President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in 2016, 2017 and 2022; was an Emulation Fighter at the Academy level in 2021; was awarded the "Face of the Year" award by the Vietnam Civil Servants' Union in 2022, the Certificate of Merit "Outstanding Intellectual of Khanh Hoa Province in 2022 by the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa Province"...

The Kovalevskaia Award is a prestigious annual award for outstanding female scientists, to honor groups and individuals who are female scientists with outstanding achievements in research and application of science into practical life, bringing many benefits in the fields - economy, society and culture. The award is named after the Russian-born female mathematician, Kovalevskaya (1850 - 1891). Up to now, the Award has been awarded to 23 groups and 52 outstanding female scientists in the fields of natural sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, agriculture, medicine, information technology...
