Currently, the province has about 30 aquatic seed production and breeding facilities (including 7 production facilities and 23 breeding facilities). The average annual output is more than 2 billion, mainly white-leg shrimp (2 billion) and freshwater fish (8 million). The seed produced mainly serves the needs of the province and the Central provinces. Currently, the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control has organized the assessment and granted certificates of eligibility to 6 aquatic seed production and breeding facilities and 3 facilities producing aquatic feed and aquaculture environmental treatment products. The Department also conducts annual inspections to maintain conditions according to regulations.
At the Quang Tri Agricultural Seed Center, shrimp seed production and supply activities have been carried out stably. Since the beginning of the year, the unit has produced 10 million black tiger shrimp seeds and 30 million white-leg shrimp, basically meeting the main crop's farming needs. For freshwater fish seeds, the unit has produced 15 million fry, 8 million fish seeds of various types, supplying more than 5.4 million freshwater fish for commercial farming. In addition, the unit also supplies about 30,000 brackish water aquatic species such as rabbitfish, grouper, brown fish, sea bass, yellowfin pomfret, etc., contributing to diversifying farming objects.

Mr. Hoang Quang Vinh, Deputy Director of Quang Tri Agricultural Seed Center, said: When buying seeds at the center, people will receive technical advice from engineers on breeding and care processes. The center is committed to ensuring technical requirements, "domesticating" the environment, and testing breeding to evaluate the quality of the seeds before supplying them, in order to achieve a high survival rate and the best economic efficiency. In the coming time, in addition to promoting the production of key varieties, the unit will continue to research and develop new varieties of high economic value, suitable for local conditions and market needs.
Head of the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control Tran Xuan Tien said: Currently, the whole province has 9,894 hectares of aquaculture, of which the intensive and semi-intensive farming area is 4,827 hectares, the shrimp farming area is 1,741 hectares, and freshwater fish is 2,872 hectares. The demand for high-quality seed sources is very large. In the period of 2024-2025, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has issued documents directing and strengthening the management of shrimp seed quality in the province; registering for certificates of qualified facilities for production and breeding of aquatic breeds and updating information on aquatic breeds; focusing on inspection and supervision of marketing and advertising activities; managing production, breeding, circulation, and implementing new regulations on seeds...
However, the development of aquatic breeds in the province still faces many difficulties. In particular, unfavorable weather and climate conditions, long cold winters, short seed production seasons, high and unstable summer temperatures, affecting survival rates during the rearing process, causing difficulties in attracting investment enterprises. In addition, importing breeds from other localities poses a potential risk of disease. The situation of traders marketing and supplying shrimp breeds directly to farming households, causing difficulties in quarantine and quality management...
The province’s efforts to become self-sufficient in aquatic breeds have yielded positive results, especially in the case of whiteleg shrimp and freshwater fish. However, challenges from weather conditions, imported breeds and quarantine require stricter management solutions. This will help create conditions for the aquaculture industry to develop stably, effectively and sustainably.
