Pham Thuy Linh won the highest prize at Kyushu Music Concour

The Kyushu Music Concour is an international music competition held annually in Japan. This year, the competition took place from March 20 to 25, attracting more than 1,000 contestants from around the world. The competition includes instrumental and vocal music competitions, contestants are divided by age, into different groups.

The judges of the competition are all prestigious professors from Japan and abroad. All contestants will receive a certificate issued by the Kyushu Music Competition program.

Attending the Kyushu Music Concour in Japan, Pham Thuy Linh, a student at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, performed the song Den Teuren zu versohnen by composer Martha. She impressed the judges with her clear, high-pitched voice and emotional performance.

Choosing the traditional white ao dai, Pham Thuy Linh also impressed the judges, audience and international friends with the beauty of a simple but extremely gentle and elegant Vietnamese girl.

"The ao dai makes me more confident psychologically, also because I want to show national pride," Pham Thuy Linh shared.

Surpassing strong competitors from many countries, Pham Thuy Linh was awarded the Best Prize by the jury of the Kyushu Music Concour. According to Meritorious Artist Tan Nhan - Deputy Head of the Vocal Department, Vietnam National Academy of Music, this is an award that no contestant has achieved in the past 3 years.

Pham Thuy Linh and the winning contestants will be awarded trophies and invited back to Japan to perform to honor the best contestants in May.

Although she had heard about the competition from her teachers and seniors, Pham Thuy Linh had not thought about participating in the competition this year. After winning the Gold Cup in the Vocal Competition at the 2023 Asian Arts Festival, Pham Thuy Linh was encouraged by teacher Tan Nhan to participate in the Kyushu Music Concour.

Won the best award but thought I only won an encouragement award

Pham Thuy Linh said: "I thought about it and decided to join the contest with the goal of expanding my knowledge, gaining experience, learning, and also wanting to understand more about other countries' cultures.

Teacher Tan Nhan was very dedicated to finding the lesson and teaching me. She even knew that this competition was very difficult, so she took me to meet her teacher, Meritorious Artist Lan Anh, and asked for her help. I was very touched but also felt quite pressured. I was determined to practice day and night to memorize the melody, pronounce correctly, and then the nuances when performing."

Near the exam date, due to the change in weather, Pham Thuy Linh had health problems: "I had the flu and coughed for a week, studying and putting together the instruments before the exam was really difficult. There were moments when I felt helpless, stressed, and had trouble sleeping. The visa and tickets were ready, so close to the exam date, should I give up? That question kept appearing in my head.

Teacher Tan Nhan was very worried, but looking into her eyes, I felt a deep kindness. I knew she really wanted me to overcome this difficult moment. I treated my throat and meditated to calm my mind to have positive energy for the competition. Overcoming the psychological barrier, I went with the group to Japan, ready for the competition."

Pham Thuy Linh acknowledged that the contestants in the competition all have good professional qualifications, and are very good at handling high notes and resonance. "Watching them sing softly and leisurely, I suddenly felt a bit worried and asked myself: What should I do?

Listening calmly, remembering what she taught, I thought about how to be myself. I sang with all I had, from my heart, sang with sincerity.

In the quiet space, the judges' encouraging smiles helped me let go of the pressure, singing as if I were lost in my own world . The story in the piece just flowed out, I was moved and could not believe that I had overcome the difficult piece, overcome my own limits. I overcame the difficult notes that my teachers taught me, which I had previously had great difficulty performing."

"The moment of awarding the prize was so exciting that it was... breathtaking. The prizes had been awarded, everyone around had been awarded, only I was left standing on the stage. When my name was announced as the winner, everyone applauded for a long time, while I felt a bit sad because I thought it was a consolation prize (Pham Thuy Linh does not know Japanese - PV).

Afterwards, the judges came up to congratulate me, and the contestants also congratulated me. It was not until I knew that it was the "Best of the competition" award that my emotions exploded, I was so happy that I could only smile and bow my head to thank everyone.

Joining the contest when my health was not good, there were times when I thought I had to give up, when I won the prize, I felt so happy and lucky to have overcome the challenges I faced, to have overcome myself. This contest has given me great lessons, unforgettable memories.

I appreciate and am extremely grateful to my teachers, especially Ms. Tan Nhan and Ms. Lan Anh, because they taught me and always encouraged and gave me strength to overcome all challenges," Pham Thuy Linh emotionally expressed.

The image of Pham Thuy Linh shining on the stage of the contest in the land of cherry blossoms is not only the pride of the female singer and her accompanying teachers, but also a beautiful mark of Vietnam in the eyes of international friends.

Pham Thuy Linh was born in 2001 in Nam Dinh . She is currently a student at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Pham Thuy Linh won second prize in the Bac Ninh Voice Competition. In July 2023, Pham Thuy Linh excellently won the Gold Cup in the Vocal Competition of the 2023 Asian Arts Festival held in Singapore.
