On the March 9 episode of MBC's music program Show! Music Core, virtual boy group PLAVE defeated LE SSERAFIM and BIBI, to win with the song "Way 4 Luv".
Notably, although PLAVE's digital music and album scores were lower than BIBI's, their voting scores overwhelmed the two rival candidates. PLAVE scored 1,000 direct voting points, while LE SSERAFIM only scored 108 points and BIBI only scored 2 points.
This is PLAVE's second win on a weekly music show. Previously, on March 6, PLAVE became the first virtual group in history to win on MBC M's Show Champion (beating BIBI, LE SSERAFIM, CRAVITY, Taeyong NCT).
However, PLAVE's participation in music shows and winning has caused mixed debates.
PLAVE debuted in March 2023, with 5 members Noah, Bamby, Yejun, Eunho and Hamin. Unlike idols created entirely by AI technology, PLAVE members are “virtual idols” - real people who interact with fans through a virtual interface. All of the group's music products have PLAVE members participating in the composition process.
The group has achieved impressive results in terms of song rankings and album sales. Although it is a virtual group, the group's achievements are not inferior to real rookies from big companies.
Therefore, PLAVE winning the music show trophy received a lot of praise from the audience. They thought that PLAVE deserved to win because the songs they released were very popular.
However, there are opinions that TV stations should not let PLAVE compete in weekly music shows. Even though they have real people behind them, they are still a virtual group, unable to participate in live performances, nor can they come to the studio to receive awards and sing encores like real artists.
This could lead to a decline in the appeal of music shows.
One viewer commented on Allkpop: “This is ridiculous. Make a music show just for these virtual idols, and don’t mix them with real idols.
If there are real people behind this virtual group, why don't they perform like real idols? Even Japan has large groups of virtual idols, and even though they are good singers, they don't participate in music shows like this."
