According to Euronews, the incident occurred on June 10 at Françoise Dolto High School in Nogent commune, Haute-Marne province in the Grand Est region, northeastern France.
While the school was conducting a routine check of school bags to prevent students from carrying dangerous items, a male student suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed a 31-year-old female employee to death.
According to the French National Gendarmerie, a police officer assisting in checking the student’s school bag was slightly injured while arresting the suspect. The 14-year-old boy was later arrested at the scene.
Following the incident, all classes at the school were suspended. The school immediately deployed psychological support and counseling for students and staff.
Prosecutor Denis Devallois confirmed the male student had no criminal record.
Education Minister Élisabeth Borne said the student had been involved in the school's anti-bullying programme, and had previously been briefly suspended for causing disruption in class.
A classmate described the male student as a fairly normal person, but sometimes behaved strangely.
Several other friends also said they could not believe he could have committed such a brutal attack.
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the act as “senseless violence,” saying in a post on social media network X that all of France was mourning the victim’s family and paying tribute to the employee.
Mr. Macron also stressed that the government will continue its efforts to push back school violence.
Although serious incidents in schools in France are relatively rare, authorities are increasingly concerned about the growing trend of carrying weapons and assaulting classmates and teachers.
In response, since the beginning of 2025, the French Ministry of Education has implemented a program to periodically check school bags at a number of high schools across the country.
Over the past two months, police and security forces have confiscated 186 knives and arrested 32 people involved or suspected of being involved in school violence.
In April, a similar attack occurred at a high school in the western French city of Nantes, where a student stabbed four classmates during lunchtime, killing one.
This incident has prompted French authorities to call for tighter security measures in schools.
