The mirror fragment is estimated to date back to the Byzantine period about 1,500 years ago, and was found between the walls of a 4th century AD building. Photo: @Israel Antiquities Authority.
According to archaeologist Navit Popovitch from the Israel Antiquities Authority, this mirror was intended to protect against evil spirits and demons, when they saw their reflection in the mirror. Not only that, at the same Usha site, similar magical mirrors were found at burial sites, placed in tombs, suspected to be used to protect the deceased on their journey to the afterlife . Meanwhile, another theory suggests that these magic mirrors may have actually been used in mirror divination, an art of divination using mirrors that was widely practiced by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
