The 'golden' time to exercise is in the evening.

Exercise is the best way to improve your overall health. A study recently published in the journal Diabetes Care has shown that exercising in the evening can help us live longer. This is a study by the University of Sydney (Australia).

In the study, scientists looked at data from nearly 30,000 people over the age of 40 who were obese over eight years. Of these, nearly 3,000 developed type 2 diabetes.

Study participants wore an activity tracker for seven consecutive days. Scientists then looked at their activity levels in three time slots: morning, afternoon, and evening.

Results showed that people who exercised more in the evening gained the greatest benefit in extending their lifespan.

Evening exercise helps you live longer

The study stated that any activity of any intensity that increases heart rate and breathing for even a few minutes also has an effect in prolonging life.

"You can exercise in many different ways, such as brisk walking, climbing stairs, jogging, manual labour or even just cleaning the house," says Dr Matthew Ahmadi of the University of Sydney.

What’s more, the study authors also emphasize that you don’t have to do these activities for too long. Just 3 minutes of increased breathing can also reap this benefit. Previous studies have shown that exercising for just 3 minutes can have a positive impact on blood sugar control as well as reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

In fact, scientists reveal, how often people do those short bursts of exercise seems to matter more than the total amount of physical activity you do each day. In other words, getting your heart rate up and breathing up for a few minutes each day may be more beneficial than doing a long workout and then sitting on the couch for the next eight hours.

According to a study from the University of Birmingham in the UK, when you work out in the evening, you can work out up to 20% longer and at a higher intensity than at other times of the day.

Additionally, according to Heather Webb, a researcher at Texas A&M University, the hormone cortisol is more active in the morning and can inhibit muscle growth. Meanwhile, the hormone testosterone increases in the evening and has the ability to promote muscle growth. Therefore, you will tend to train harder and more effectively when exercising at night.

Many people think that exercising at night will cause insomnia. However, researchers have conducted several experiments to evaluate the sleep quality of people who exercise at night compared to those who do not. The results showed that people who exercise at night fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.

Exercising in the evening helps you lose weight faster

A study published in the journal Experimental Physiology found that exercising late in the day can reduce levels of the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin, which may help you lose or control weight.
