In early 2025, the Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area Management Board under the Da Nang City Special-use Forest Management Board received a report from people participating in forest protection patrols in the conservation area showing signs of elephant baby birth in the Na Lau area.
Immediately, the Management Board made a plan and set up 30 camera traps in 15 locations in areas where elephants often move. However, the first set of images did not detect any new elephants. The unit continued to set up camera traps in other potential areas.
From July 20 to July 23, the Management Board collected camera traps. When checking the images, they discovered an image of a baby elephant. The image of a baby elephant frolicking with its mother is the “sweet fruit” of the days of hard work protecting the green forest by the forest rangers at the Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area.
The image shows the baby elephant moving flexibly and always being closely protected by its mother. The appearance of the baby elephant marks a positive sign of the natural reproduction process of the wild elephant herd living in the Reserve.
This is also a positive signal showing that elephant conservation work here is on the right track, contributing to the conservation of the endangered Asian elephant species.
In 2020, with the support of the Green Annamites Project, the Quang Nam Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area also recorded the appearance of a baby elephant about 1 year old.
There are currently at least nine elephants in the Reserve, and the wild elephant population here has a complete herd structure including males, females and calves.
