Lao Chai 1 village product exhibition house (Khun Ha commune) creates a highlight for tourism services
Amidst the mist, the wooden roofs nestled between terraced fields and endless green forests in Lao Chai 1 village appear simple and poetic. However, the important factor that creates the "soul" of Lao Chai 1 is not only the scenery, but also the unique cultural identity of the Mong people, from the sound of the panpipe calling friends to the brilliant colors of brocade skirts. With these cultural values, in 2024, Lao Chai 1 village was recognized as a 3-star OCOP community tourism village - a milestone affirming the right direction in economic development: preserving, maintaining and promoting cultural identity associated with tourism development.
Arriving at Lao Chai 1, visiting the village, we had many more interesting experiences. First of all, the stone road was made from cobblestones. The roadside was decorated with orchid pots, planted with other flowers, making the space more brilliant. The gates of each household were decorated in their own style, using natural materials to create a unique personal style.
Stopping at Cu A Long Homestay, we were warmly welcomed by the host. Inside the house, there is a set of uniquely designed tables and chairs, decorated with artistic and creative wild chestnuts. Mr. Long shared: My family has been doing tourism since 2021, the homestay is a wooden house in the style of the Mong people, the instruments in the house are also arranged to ensure uniqueness, creating a unique style. With musical instruments, traditional costumes... hanging in the house, not only for display and introduction but also for sale as goods. The homestay has 5 private rooms, 1 communal room, with a capacity of 20 people. Services include: accommodation, health care (foot bath with medicinal leaves). In recent years, the homestay has welcomed a stable number of guests.
It is known that focusing on developing community tourism, in October 2024, the village built a Product Exhibition House and assigned the village Community Tourism Cooperative Group to manage it. Currently, the Cooperative Group has 14 members taking turns on duty, selling local agricultural products (honey, wild tea, etc.); renting traditional costumes of the Mong people.
Lao Chai 1 village currently has 47 households, more than 240 people, 100% of whom are Mong ethnic people. Clearly identifying advantages and being creative in ways to develop sustainable community tourism, the village's socio-economy has clearly changed. Five households running homestays have been supported with 50 million VND/household from Resolution No. 59/2021/NQ-HDND stipulating a number of policies to support the preservation and promotion of fine traditional cultural identities of ethnic groups associated with tourism development in Lai Chau province in the period of 2021-2025.
Comrade Cu A Chu - Secretary of Lao Chai 1 village Party cell shared: “We propagated and mobilized 47 households to renovate their houses, create green, clean and beautiful landscapes for the houses, roads and alleys; build homestays but still maintain the traditional wooden houses and make traditional costumes. Establish an art troupe; maintain practice and performance every Saturday to serve the needs of tourists. The village also built a showroom for products from traditional costumes, production tools, musical instruments to serve visitors and shoppers; arranged a small market to meet the buying and selling needs of the people and tourists on weekends. In recent years, not only domestic but also foreign tourists coming to the village are very excited by the cool, fresh climate and the peace of the highland village”.
Not only Lao Chai 1 community tourism village, Khun Ha commune also attracts tourists by the beauty of flower valleys, stalactites in caves and houses, the beauty of the Lu ethnic people in Ban Tham community tourism village.
Comrade Nguyen Thanh Son - Deputy Head of the Department of Culture and Society of Khun Ha commune said: "The commune actively implements the work of preserving the traditional cultural values of the ethnic groups in the area in conjunction with tourism development. Specifically, school units integrate the introduction of traditional culture into extracurricular activities; organize students to wear traditional costumes twice a week. Mobilize, propagate, and accompany the community tourism villages in the development process. Along with the innovation in the way people do tourism, it has attracted more and more tourists to visit and experience, contributing to increasing revenue, raising awareness of conservation, and promoting the beauty of traditional culture.
The community tourism villages of Khun Ha commune are not noisy and bustling, but the peace and poetry, along with the unique cultural identity, the friendliness and openness of the people have been and are holding tourists back. And then, when each person leaves, they tell themselves that they will return as soon as possible, for as long as possible.
