Developing sustainable ASEAN sports with a long-term vision

In the integration flow of the ASEAN region, sports are not only a race for achievements but are also becoming a symbol of friendship, community cohesion, and a long-term vision for sustainable development, which was clearly demonstrated at the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports - AMMS 8, which was held in Hanoi on October 16.

Sports have always been a bridge of friendship, solidarity and development among ASEAN countries, contributing to connecting the hearts of people in the region, nurturing the spirit of: "One vision - One identity - One community". (Video clip about AMMS 8 in Hanoi on October 16).

The new orientations in ASEAN sports cooperation at the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS 8) affirmed the determination to build a healthy, people-centered community and consider sports as a bridge for peace , friendship and social progress. Vietnam hopes that this Conference will unite the region in the common goal of building a long-term vision for regional sports, including the ASEAN Action Plan on Sports for the period 2026-2030, realizing the aspiration of a strong, inclusive and sustainable ASEAN for all.

In his welcome speech at the Conference, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh emphasized that Vietnam hopes that through this Conference, we will together build a long-term vision for ASEAN sports, including the ASEAN Action Plan on Sports for the period 2026-2030, contributing to realizing the aspiration of a strong, inclusive and sustainable ASEAN for all.

ASEAN sports cooperation has achieved many positive results in recent times, from developing school sports, community sports to sports for the disabled. Sports not only contribute to improving people's health but also strengthen trust and solidarity among nations.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th AMMS, Minister Nguyen Van Hung expressed his belief that: “The 8th AMMS is not only a place to evaluate achievements, but also an opportunity for us to work towards a more prosperous ASEAN - where sports become a driving force for unity, development and spreading humanistic values, peace and happiness”.

AMMS 8 has demonstrated the importance of sports - a bridge for peace, friendship and sustainable development. Through sports, ASEAN not only builds a healthy community but also spreads human values ​​and happiness.

Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong highly appreciated the active participation of the delegations and affirmed that the success of AMMS 8 demonstrated the spirit of solidarity, cooperation and responsibility of member countries in building a close-knit and prosperous ASEAN community.

The idea of ​​human development through sports is becoming a consistent orientation of ASEAN, considering each sports activity as a part of the policy of welfare, health and civic education. Along with the strong development, the requirement of transparency and integrity in sports is put on top. ASEAN countries have agreed to implement the Memorandum of Understanding with FIFA and WADA, to prevent doping, cheating and negative behaviors, towards a fair and honest sports environment.

Sports have always been an important bridge, connecting the people of ASEAN countries in the spirit of friendship, solidarity and cooperation.

Ms. Wanida Phansa-ard - Deputy Minister of Sports and Tourism of Thailand - affirmed: Thailand always considers sports as a pillar of social development.

The Vietnamese representative at the conference also expressed the desire to promote sports integrity to protect athletes, while affirming the responsibility of each country in building a transparent and professional image of ASEAN. This is a strategic step for sports to truly become a tool to promote regional peace and cooperation.

Along with the integrity factor in sports, developing sports in association with the environment and technology is also a priority of ASEAN. The models of “Green Games”, “Sports for the Environment” or the initiative to build an ASEAN Center for Excellence in Coaching are shaping a new direction with the message: modern, friendly and smart sports.

Mr. Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu - Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Malaysia presented his opinion at the Conference.

Digital transformation is also expected to help manage, train and organize events more effectively, while expanding access to sports for everyone. This is the key to moving towards a sustainable sport that is both integrated and maintains regional identity.

Through this, it can be affirmed that ASEAN sports today are not only competitions, but also a journey to nurture people, unite the community, expand cooperation and spread human values, towards a healthy, united and prosperous ASEAN.
