Developing concentrated vegetable production areas

Currently, Thai Nguyen has nearly 20 thousand hectares of land for growing various types of vegetables, with an output of nearly 300 thousand tons/year, of which many areas are located along the Cau River. This is a favorable condition for the province to develop concentrated, safe, commodity-oriented vegetable production areas.

The area of land for vegetable production in the suburban areas of the province is gradually shrinking, requiring people to apply science and technology to serve the production of safe vegetables to increase productivity and quality.

In order to develop safe and concentrated vegetable production areas, over the past 5 years, Thai Nguyen has effectively implemented policies issued by the Central and the province such as: Attracting businesses to invest in agricultural production; orienting the scale of safe vegetable growing areas, prioritizing concentrated production areas; forming a green vegetable production chain...

In addition, the province has a mechanism to support cooperatives producing safe vegetables; build codes for growing areas, ensuring traceability of origin. In particular, all levels and sectors in the province are also interested in organizing training courses, coaching, and transferring science and technology on safe vegetable production processes to people; encouraging people to produce high-tech vegetables...

Mr. Nguyen Ta, Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, said: To support people in developing safe and concentrated vegetable production areas, we always strengthen management and prevent the trading and use of banned pesticides. Instruct people to use pesticides according to the "4 rights" principle; resolutely eliminate unqualified pesticide trading establishments; form a plant protection network associated with ensuring plant safety at the grassroots level. Especially, do a good job of predicting and forecasting pests and diseases...

With great efforts, up to now, Thai Nguyen has developed a number of concentrated vegetable growing areas with an area of over 500 hectares. Of which, nearly 100 hectares have been applied with safe production technology, VietGAP, using greenhouse technology, net house, automatic irrigation system; producing off-season vegetables... In particular, in the province, there is 1 safe vegetable production facility that has been granted a growing area code...

It can be affirmed that Thai Nguyen is developing safe vegetable production, concentrated vegetable production areas in accordance with the requirements, meeting consumer demand. However, the area of safe vegetable production, concentrated vegetable production areas of the province are still quite modest.

In addition, the output for safe green vegetables is not guaranteed. For nearly 20 years, Thai Nguyen vegetable growers have always been in a state of good harvest and low prices.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Que, Tuc Tien vegetable village, Tuc Duyen (now Phan Dinh Phung ward), shared: During the recent Lunar New Year, I had to sell kohlrabi and cabbage at a cheap price (from 2 to 5 thousand VND/kg), the income was not enough to cover expenses...

Therefore, in order to develop a safe and concentrated vegetable production area, in the coming time, Thai Nguyen needs to have synchronous and feasible solutions. In particular, organizing for enterprises and farmers to "join hands" in production and consumption needs to be paid attention by managers. Especially, promoting the implementation of linkages associated with agricultural product consumption through economic contracts, thereby forming sustainable production chains.

Along with that, the relevant departments and agencies in the province need to continue to support enterprises, cooperatives, and individual households to accumulate and concentrate land, invest in specialized vegetable production, and meet the needs of processing. Encourage people to apply science and technology in production and processing to improve capacity and product quality...

Ms. Que said: Safe vegetable production in a concentrated manner is what our people have long desired. However, when the land fund for growing vegetables in urban areas is gradually narrowing as it is now, we hope that the authorities at all levels and functional sectors will have many feasible solutions to support people in producing high-tech vegetables, bringing higher productivity, quality and economic efficiency.
