High on drugs, a man shoved an entire toothbrush cup up his anus.

Accordingly, a foreign object measuring 7cm in diameter and 12cm in length was recently removed from the rectum of a 32-year-old man by doctors at Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi.

Dr. Pham Hieu Tam, from the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said the patient was a 32-year-old male with a history of multiple methamphetamine use.

Because the patient inserted a foreign object, a toothbrush cup, into his anus after using methamphetamine, and was unable to remove it himself, he was transferred to Ha Nam Provincial General Hospital, and then to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

The patient was admitted in a conscious state; pulse and blood pressure were stable; there was no fever, no vomiting, and no abdominal distension.

X-ray images revealed a foreign object lodged deep within the patient's rectum. Because the object, measuring 7cm in diameter and 12cm in length, was deeply embedded in the rectum and firmly stuck in the pelvis, making removal via the anus impossible, the doctors decided to perform open surgery to open the rectum, remove the foreign object, and bring the sigmoid colon out to create an artificial anus.

After 3 hours of surgery, the patient was conscious, vital signs were stable, abdomen was soft, and was transferred to the monitoring ward. One day after surgery, the patient was able to eat and drink, the colostomy was patent, and the patient was transferred back to the provincial hospital for continued treatment.

Doctor Tâm also advised that people should not insert objects into their anus to try new sensations, as this can lead to infection, bleeding, or even rectal perforation, which is very dangerous.

When similar incidents occur, patients should not attempt to remove the foreign object themselves, as this could cause it to slip deeper into the rectum, leading to significant damage to the intestinal lining. Patients should promptly seek medical attention for timely treatment and intervention.
