“De Men: Adventure to the Swamp” is a vivid demonstration of Vietnam’s domestic animation production capacity, as all stages from directing, scriptwriting, visual design, animation to technical post-production are carried out by young and passionate Vietnamese artists.
With sharp character creation, modern techniques, cinematic storytelling style and universal messages about justice-freedom-friendship, the film affirms the desire to bring Vietnamese animation to the world .
Although adapted from the original “Diary of a Cricket” by writer To Hoai, the film does not simply retell the old story. The crew has completely adapted the plot to suit modern tastes, expanded the world of characters and added action and music elements – the strengths of international cinema – but still retains the humanity, courage and solidarity of the original.

The production team spent more than three years to build the entire vivid insect world, subtly anthropomorphizing but still maintaining the biological characteristics of each species. From the main character De Men to the Mantis Warrior, the Frog King, or the residents of the Swamp Village – all have Vietnamese colors: both familiar, creative, and both folk and modern.
“We are not just making animated films for children, but want to tell a real cinematic story – with action, emotion, and depth – using the cultural identity and skills of the Vietnamese people,” director Mai Phuong affirmed.
Notably, this is the first Vietnamese film to be produced entirely at Digital Studio – a creative model linking CinePlus, Thai Nguyen province and Thai Nguyen University of Information Technology and Communications (ICTU). This collaboration marks the first time in the country that a feature film has been produced by a team of lecturers, students and technology experts. Therefore, the film is also a successful test for the training and production model.
Production director Vu Duy Nam said: “This is not just a film, it is also a process of training and providing opportunities. We believe that for Vietnamese animation to develop, there must be real projects, real scale, helping young people to try and grow from there.”
The film is rated P – suitable for all ages – and is scheduled to be released in theaters nationwide from May 30, 2025. This is not only a work for children, but also a bold step of Vietnamese cinema on the journey of integrating into the world with pure Vietnamese creative power.
