Lunar New Year films 2026: Explosion and differentiation.
As of February 22nd (the 6th day of the Lunar New Year), the box office landscape for the 2026 Lunar New Year film season remains unchanged. Tran Thanh's film "Tho Oi!!" continues to far surpass its competitors. According to statistics from the independent box office website Box Office Vietnam (with potential for error), the film has currently grossed over 217 billion VND. It has also set several records: surpassing 150 billion VND after 3 days of release with over 1.5 million tickets sold, and reaching 200 billion VND after only 5 days with over 2.2 million tickets sold; and achieving the highest daily revenue (the 4th day of the Lunar New Year) with over 41 billion VND...
The dominance of "Rabbit, Oh My!!" effectively sealed the box office race for Tet 2026 within the first few days of its release, with no comebacks like the case of "Billion Dollar Kiss" (directed by Thu Trang) a year earlier. "My Father's House, One Room" ranked second with nearly 71 billion VND in revenue. "Heaven's Gift" (directed by Le Thanh Son) currently has over 43 billion VND, while "The Scent of Pho " (directed by Minh Beta) ranks fourth with over 27 billion VND in revenue.
Despite dominating the box office, "Rabbit, Oh My!!" also sparked heated and conflicting debates on social media, from the script and acting to the ending... The incident of the film distributor kneeling before the audience; the problem of secretly filming and distributing "Rabbit, Oh My!!" online... were also topics that received much discussion.
Following the Lunar New Year film season, the Vietnamese film market continues its post-Tet film season with two films released on February 26th and 27th: " Let's Go Home" (directed by Tran Dinh Hien) and "Thank You for Staying Up with Me" (directed by Chung Chi Cong).
Tet stage: the season of spoken drama.
This year, the 5B Small Stage Theatre will be open continuously from the 1st to the 6th with 17 performances, ranging from adult plays ( The Tarpaulin Village, Love Outside of Marriage ) to children's plays ( The Secret of the Circus and the Magic Horse, Uproar in the Fairy Tale Forest, The Magic Pen, The Chicken and Duck Squad ). The theatre will take a break for two days, February 23rd and 24th, and then resume performances until March 1st.

This Lunar New Year season, the Hoang Thai Thanh theater staged two plays: "29 Brothers Return" (written by Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc and Hoang Thai Thanh, directed by Meritorious Artist Thanh Hoi) and "Meeting at the End of the Road" (written by Hoang Thai Thanh and Nguyen Toai, directed by Ai Nhu), with all performances exceeding 80% of the seats. After the performance on February 22nd, the theater will also take a two-day break before reopening on March 1st.
With two theaters at Idecaf (showcasing plays such as: *The Red Crow Spreads Its Wings*, *The Village of Thieves*, *Luong Son Ba - Chuc Anh Dai*, *12 Midwives*, *Tam Cam's Great War*, *Each Soul Keeps Its Own *) and the Youth Theater - Ho Chi Minh City Youth Cultural Center ( *Miss Island*, *Lost in Bangkok*, *Roaming Pattaya*, *7 Spider Demons *), Idecaf Theater had 24 performances this year and was also a huge success, with almost continuous sold-out shows... Many other theaters also recorded positive results in the early days of spring. Hong Van Theater, Truong Hung Minh Art Theater, The World Youth Theater... all had stable audiences, with most performances completely sold out.
Unlike spoken drama, Cai Luong (Vietnamese traditional opera) focuses on the spring festival season after Tet with performances such as: "The Emperor's Spring Excursion " (author: late artist Bach Mai, director: People's Artist Huu Quoc) by Huynh Long Troupe, performed on February 24th and 25th at Hong Lien Theater; the historical Cai Luong play "Phuoc Loc Tho" (author: playwright Hoang Song Viet, director: Dien Trung), at Tran Huu Trang Cai Luong Theater on February 24th; the Cai Luong play "Kim Ngoc Luong Duyen" (author: Nguyet Ha, director: Meritorious Artist Chi Linh), at Chi Linh - Van Ha Theater on February 25th; and "A Spring Night Dream" (authors: Phi Hung - Nhi Kieu, director: People's Artist Tran Ngoc Giau), at Tran Huu Trang Cai Luong Theater on February 26th.
Circus performances during this year's Tet holiday continued to impress audiences. The show "Memories of the Fire God - A Prequel to the Mysterious Land" (artistic direction: Le Hong Son; script and direction: Cong Nguyen) at the Gia Dinh Park Circus had 10 consecutive sold-out performances (except for the performance on the first day of Tet). The circus stage will remain open until March 1st before taking a break to prepare for the new season.
