The 30-episode series "Gieo nhan" will air at 7:35 p.m. on HTV7, from Monday to Wednesday every week, starting from May 16.
Breath of fresh air
The film tells the story of Nhu Binh (played by Nam Cuong) - an orphan, a wanderer who was taken in by Mr. Ba Chanh (played by Huynh Dua) who raised, educated and married his only daughter. However, because of his selfishness and "despising the poor and the rich", Nhu Binh continuously caused many troubles, harming his relatives, including his benefactors and his wife and children. The film is the latest work in the genre of films set in the past with content adapted from the novel by writer Ho Bieu Chanh.
Previously, in October 2022, the film "Loi dao cang thuong" - adapted from two novels "Bo vo" and "Bo chong" by writer Ho Bieu Chanh - directed by Meritorious Artist Ho Ngoc Xum, broadcast on SCTV14 channel, also attracted audiences. The film is a story about two families Oanh (played by Duong Cam Lynh) - Thien (played by Hoa Hiep) and Ba Huyen (played by Oanh Kieu) - Nhu Binh (played by Ma Hieu Dong) in the context of ancient Southern society.

Thien works for a small car company, with a salary just enough to support his wife and children. Oanh is pampered by her husband, has a hobby of dancing, and believes that money is the most important thing that determines a person's life. Ba Huyen is a neighbor of Thien - Oanh's family, works as a cake seller at the market, works hard to raise children and pay for her husband's education. However, Nhu Binh is not satisfied with his hard-working wife. The lives of the two families are disrupted by the material temptations from outside people like Hoi Dong Dang, the wealthy widow Hai Huong.
Meritorious Artist - Director Ho Ngoc Xum said that he still kept the Southern character and humanistic spirit in Ho Bieu Chanh's novel during the adaptation process. However, to meet the current needs of the audience and not repeat himself, he made many changes compared to previous works. Specifically, the film's rhythm is slow when it needs to be slow, and fast when it needs to be fast. Many new characters appear and some characters are fully developed, with more plot and fate than in the original novel.
Compared to previous films, "Gieo nhan" has a newer way of introduction, closer to cinema. "The film "Gieo nhan" has a faster pace, the dialogue is not the same as before but follows the character's personality through the emphasis on words. Some old local words in the novel by writer Ho Bieu Chanh are replaced with easier to understand, more suitable words so that the actors can fully understand the content of the story and fully convey the character's emotions to the audience" - director Ho Ngoc Xum informed.
Resilient
The films "Loi dao cang thuong" and "Gieo nhan" both deal with past and present issues, close to modern society, and are not necessarily an old story with humanistic messages.
In which, "Loi dao cang thuong" is still a story about a husband and wife that can be found somewhere in social life. The filmmaker wants to use the old story as a gentle reminder to today's audience - hoping that everyone can live better, live a life of complete love and loyalty to husband and wife, be filial to parents, maintain humanity, courtesy, righteousness, wisdom, and trust. The film "Gieo nhan" deals with "hot" issues in society such as fighting for property, adultery, bribery, corruption... reflecting an extreme society, full of intrigues and traps, but somewhere still glimmering with the light of humanity.
Previously, small screen audiences were fascinated by a series of films adapted from Ho Bieu Chanh's novels such as: "Con nha ngheo", "No doi", "Ngon co gio choi", "Long da dan ba", "Tan Phong nu si"... However, after a period of strong development, these types of films gradually became saturated, the reason being that insiders believe that the audience was "overfed" and bored.
However, the genre of films with old settings still has its own place in the hearts of small screen audiences. Producers have begun to turn to plays, reformed operas, folk tales, etc. to adapt, both to meet the needs and to change the "taste" of the audience. New directions of exploitation have opened up, not following the beaten path, finding the new in the old and helping this genre of film go further, instead of lingering around old memories.
Recently, the return of films adapted from Ho Bieu Chanh's novels shows the tenacity of films with old settings. Obviously, in a time of high competition, audiences have many opportunities to be entertained and enjoy a variety of films, so challenges always exist. With films made from Ho Bieu Chanh's novels, in addition to the challenge of innovation and change compared to previous works, there is also the need to find actors, settings, and ways to tell the story in a way that is suitable for the times.
According to Meritorious Artist Bui Vi Nghi, Head of the Feature Film Department - Ho Chi Minh City Television Film Studio (TFS), the film "Gieo nhan" is not simply about the downward journey of a person who "despises the poor and is greedy for wealth" but also conveys a larger message about the law of cause and effect. In addition, the film reflects hot issues in society but does not delve into sensationalism, violence, and killing that annoys viewers, but wants to convey humane messages through the story.
Meritorious Artist - Director Ho Ngoc Xum said that in recent times, making films with old settings has become more difficult as ancient houses have become increasingly dilapidated. Filmmakers have to rebuild the settings, which costs more money. In addition, they also have difficulty finding actors with suitable appearances that meet the film's criteria.
"I find that movies with old settings are still enjoyable to watch 10 years later, they are not outdated and have their own place in the hearts of the audience, they are not forgotten. When mentioning me, the audience still remembers the movies with old settings, they have their own attraction, that makes them happy" - actress Quynh Lam, who is called "Queen of old movies" by the audience, confided.
According to experts, despite going through different ups and downs, audiences still have special affection for films with old settings. To conquer increasingly sophisticated and demanding audiences, filmmakers must strive to bring them novelty through changes in many factors.
