Deputy Prime Minister: 'Customs digitally transforms towards intelligence'

Hanoi Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang requested the customs sector to promote digitalization in a modern and intelligent direction on par with the world at WCO 2023, October 10.

The opening ceremony of the World Customs Organization (WCO) 2023 Technology Conference and Exhibition took place at the National Convention Center.

In his opening speech, Mr. Nguyen Van Can, Director General of the General Department of Vietnam Customs, said that over the past 30 years, Vietnam Customs has transformed from manual customs procedures to electronic customs and towards paperless customs, ensuring the circulation of goods and global supply chains, ensuring security and safety for the community and national interests.

In the coming time, the unit will carry out extensive digital transformation towards building a regular, modern, and smart customs, and by 2030, it will have a level equal to that of developed countries in the world.

Currently, the customs sector is implementing the connection of the national single window mechanism with ministries and branches; the ASEAN single window mechanism with members in the region; connecting with other customs agencies in the world in the direction of digital customs, smart customs, green customs as recommended by the WCO and directed by the Government .

"To soon achieve the goal, Vietnam Customs hopes to continue receiving support from the WCO and customs agencies of member countries in transporting, applying advanced technologies, exchanging information to connect and promote the circulation of goods globally, contributing to the development of the common home of the WCO," said Mr. Nguyen Van Can.

At the event, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang highly appreciated the close coordination of the WCO, the Vietnamese Ministry of Finance and relevant agencies in organizing this important event.

"The theme of the conference is 'Welcoming the digital era, applying technology, promoting innovation and nurturing the next generation of professional customs officers', demonstrating the timely response to the general trend of the world, in line with the development priorities of the Vietnam Customs sector," said the Deputy Prime Minister.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Vietnam's goal is to build and develop a modern and synchronous customs sector in accordance with international standards and practices. Therefore, it is necessary to promote digital transformation to build a regular, modern customs sector on par with developed countries, leading in the implementation of digital government, with digital customs and smart customs models.

To successfully implement the above strategy, the Deputy Prime Minister said that strengthening international cooperation and integration in customs is an important task.

Secretary General of the World Customs Organization, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, Vietnam affirmed that the WCO is always ready to provide support to Vietnam Customs, and this conference is a testament to that.

According to the doctor, to build and nurture the next generation of customs experts, customs leaders need to be steadfast in their goals, as well as inspire future generations of customs officers, while promoting existing traditions.

The World Customs Organization (WCO) Technology Conference and Exhibition was hosted by the General Department of Customs in coordination with the World Customs Organization from October 10-12.

With the theme "Welcoming the digital era: Applying technology, promoting innovation and nurturing the next generation of professional customs officers", the conference is a forum to introduce, exchange, share experiences, solutions and trends in applying technology in customs management and facilitating trade between customs agencies and partners.

As the host country, Vietnam Customs participated in two plenary sessions, with the theme "Strategy behind technology: Applying technology to solve global challenges"; the theme "Technology to support trade facilitation in the digital age: Successful lessons". The Vietnamese representative also participated in the role of coordinating the topic "Green Customs for a sustainable future: Innovative solutions for trade management and border management". In the exhibition area, this organization has a booth introducing the development history, modernization process, technology application of Vietnam Customs, achievements in customs reform and modernization.

The World Customs Organization (WCO) is an independent intergovernmental organization with a mission to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of customs administration. Last year, the WCO held a conference in the Netherlands with dozens of participating countries and hundreds of businesses introducing new technologies that contribute to the modernization of customs administration.
