On the evening of February 5, thousands of protesters gathered in the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka, carrying sticks, hammers and other tools. Some also used cranes and excavators to raze the building.
The house was once the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led Bangladesh's independence struggle in 1971. After he was assassinated here in 1975, Ms. Hasina turned it into a museum.
Images on social media showed the building almost leveled, with parts completely burned down. Several attacks also took place overnight, targeting homes and businesses belonging to supporters of Ms Hasina's Awami League party.
Protesters from the Students Against Discrimination movement saw Hasina's online speech as a challenge to the caretaker government and staged a protest called the "Bulldozer March" in response.
Protesters also chanted slogans criticizing India, where Ms. Hasina has lived in exile since August 2024 after being ousted by a student uprising. The caretaker government led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus has requested Ms. Hasina's extradition, but India has not responded.
"They can destroy a building, but they cannot destroy history. History will take its revenge," Ms. Hasina said in an online speech, calling on the people of Bangladesh to rise up against the caretaker government, accusing it of unconstitutionally seizing power.
The student-led movement behind the protests has announced plans to change Bangladesh's 1972 constitution, saying it carries the legacy of Hasina's family.
Bangladesh's caretaker government has faced many challenges since taking power following the ouster of Ms Hasina. The reforms it has proposed have been controversial, while protests have continued.
The political situation in Bangladesh remains tense, reflecting deep divisions within society about the country's future.
