Ho Chi Minh City's transportation sector is studying two options for constructing an underpass beneath Ton Duc Thang Street, near Nguyen Hue pedestrian street, with a total investment of 1,359-1,477 billion VND.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation is currently studying options for undergrounding the road running along the Saigon River, in order to align with the spatial planning of the 930-hectare core area of the city center.

Ton Duc Thang Street is one of the five oldest avenues in Ho Chi Minh City. Located in the heart of District 1, it is approximately two kilometers long, starting at the intersection with Le Duan Street, then running through the Ba Son area and curving along Bach Dang Wharf Park to Khanh Hoi Bridge. This road directly connects Nguyen Hue pedestrian street, Me Linh Square, Bach Dang Wharf, and is one of the main routes between the city center and District 4 and South Saigon.

The undergrounding of Ton Duc Thang Street is being studied for a length of nearly one kilometer, from the foot of Ba Son Bridge (formerly Thu Thiem 2) to Khanh Hoi Bridge. Option one involves constructing a 765-meter-long enclosed tunnel, starting near Ngo Van Nam Street and extending through Me Linh Square, Dong Khoi Street, and Nguyen Hue Street. Both ends of the tunnel would be open-cut, one connecting to the Ba Son Bridge access road and the other to Khanh Hoi Bridge.

The other option, a closed tunnel, also starts near Ngo Van Nam Street but only connects to the beginning of Nguyen Hue Street, with a total length of 683 meters. Both ends would be open tunnels similar to this one. The total investment for the two options is estimated at approximately VND 1,477 billion and VND 1,359 billion, respectively.

The Department of Transportation stated that these are only preliminary studies in accordance with the plan. The options will be carefully considered to ensure suitability and feasibility.

Previously, according to the architectural management regulations approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in 2022, Ton Duc Thang Street along Bach Dang Wharf was planned to be moved to ground level along with an underground parking lot, with the space above reserved for pedestrians. Once constructed, the underground route will allow two-way traffic, and the parking lot is planned to be located approximately 100 meters from Me Linh Square towards Ngo Van Nam Street.

Along with Ton Duc Thang Street, the area between Me Linh Square next door will also have an underground level constructed, creating a "low-lying garden" surrounded by retail shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. This "low-lying garden" will connect directly to the underground parking lot beneath Ton Duc Thang Street and the surrounding buildings.

Specifically, on the ground level, the Me Linh construction site dedicates 50% of its area to green spaces, including fountains, creating an open and airy environment... Between the construction site and the Saigon River, bus stops, light rail, and water taxis are arranged, making it convenient for pedestrians...
