PlayStation 6 production costs have increased significantly due to SSDs and hardware specifications.
According to Wccftech , the production cost of the PlayStation 6 (PS6) is currently estimated at around $760. This figure is significantly higher than Sony's traditional target retail price, raising concerns that the new console could approach the $1,000 mark.
However, the $699 price point is still considered feasible if Sony agrees to subsidize the hardware, meaning selling it below cost to expand its user base. This is a strategy previously employed in many generations of consoles to compensate for losses through software and service revenue.

The PS6 is expected to use a 1TB Gen5 SSD, no optical drive, and more powerful hardware, but the high cost could significantly increase the selling price.

The expected configuration of the PS6 also contributes to the increased cost. The console is said to use a 1TB Gen5 SSD and will not include a disc drive. While removing the disc drive doesn't save much money, the cost of high-speed SSDs remains a major factor driving up the overall price. Previously, the PlayStation 5 Pro saw a significant price increase, partly due to its larger SSD capacity.
Another factor influencing pricing decisions is the competitive landscape. According to leaked information, Xbox is no longer a direct competitor as it once was, as Microsoft's next-generation products are reportedly targeting a different market segment. This could leave Sony with less incentive to maintain low prices through heavy subsidies.
Furthermore, the PlayStation 6 is predicted to face numerous challenges right from its launch. Component prices, such as RAM and SSDs, remain high, while the global economy is still unstable. These factors could directly impact consumer purchasing power.
According to Matthew Cassells, founder of Alderon Games, Sony may have difficulty convincing PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro users to upgrade to the new system. If the price is too high, the generational transition cycle could be prolonged, forcing developers to continue supporting the older hardware for longer. This risks slowing down the technological progress of next-generation games.
