PSG pocketed the biggest prize money in the Champions League this season. |
PSG finally got their hands on the prestigious elephant ear cup after a top performance with a devastating 5-0 victory over Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena in the early morning of June 1. This was the biggest score difference in the history of European Cup finals. In addition, PSG also pocketed a large bonus.
According to Football Meets Data , PSG earned the most money from the UEFA Champions League this season. The French team earned a total of 148.4 million euros, a figure that skyrocketed after defeating Inter Milan in the final match.
UEFA divides the Champions League prize money into three main groups. Each team that participates in the qualifying round receives €18.62 million. Next is the TV rights and the five-year performance coefficient of the clubs. Finally, there is the performance bonus, based on results in the qualifying round and qualifying for the knockout rounds.
PSG reached the final, and at the same time had a high UEFA coefficient, helping them rise to the top of the prize money rankings despite finishing 15th in the qualifying round. Reaching the final alone helped PSG pocket an additional 18.5 million euros.
With the championship, PSG received an additional 6.5 million euros and an additional 4 million euros for qualifying for the European Super Cup next season, bringing the total bonus to 148.4 million euros. According to Marca , this is a record bonus amount ever for a team participating in the Champions League.
Behind PSG is Inter Milan with 136.7 million euros. The Serie A representative had an impressive journey and won the right to participate in the final. With a stable UEFA coefficient and excellent performance throughout the tournament, Inter earned a huge profit.
The rankings show that other big teams such as Arsenal (117 million euros), Barcelona (116.5 million euros), Bayern Munich (105.9 million euros), Dortmund (102.1) or Real Madrid (101.8 million euros) also have huge revenues but are far behind PSG.
It is also worth noting that UEFA has applied a new prize money allocation mechanism since this season, in which 37.5% of the total budget is divided based on competition performance, 35% based on commercial and television value, and the remaining 27.5% is divided equally among the 36 participating teams.
