Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered 160,000 people to be drafted into the military, marking the largest conscription initiative in years, as US-brokered ceasefire talks with Ukraine continue.
Russia's military conscription runs from April 1 to July 15, and applies to Russian citizens aged 18 to 30. According to Ukraine's Countering Disinformation Center, this is Russia's largest recruitment campaign since the conflict with Ukraine began in 2022.
According to the center, in the spring of 2022, 134,500 people were drafted , and in the fall of that year, another 120,000 were called up. In the spring of 2023, 147,000 were drafted, and another 130,000 in the fall. In 2024, there will be two more drafts, of 150,000 and 133,000. Russia has said that conscripts will not be sent to the front lines.

Meanwhile, the German armed forces, the Bundeswehr, said its troops would be deployed along NATO's eastern flank in Lithuania. The 45th Armored Brigade is scheduled to be fully operational by 2027 with a strength of up to 5,000 troops.
Lithuania borders Moscow's ally Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, the likely site of any future conflict between Moscow and the alliance.
This is the first permanent presence of German troops abroad since World War II, a move seen as a response to Berlin's concerns that Moscow could expand the conflict into the Baltic region.
Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) also believes that Moscow is preparing for a larger confrontation with NATO. Brigadier General Christoph Huber, in a statement: "We must ensure the protection, freedom and security of our Lithuanian allies here on NATO's eastern flank."
