(CLO) Russian troops have liberated several communities in the Ukrainian-held Kursk region, as well as made significant advances in the Donbas region over the past week, according to the Russian Defense Ministry on Friday.

Specifically, the TASS news agency quoted a statement saying: "During the week, units of the Northern Combat Group continued to destroy Ukrainian armed formations on the territory of the Kursk Region. They liberated the settlements of Plekhovo, Daryino, and Novoivanovka in the Kursk Region…," as well as gaining control of the settlements of Zhyoltoye, Berestki, and Zarya in Donetsk, Ukraine.

In addition, in response to Ukraine's ATACMS missile attack on a military airfield in Taganrog, the Russian military launched a precision strike on major Ukrainian fuel and energy facilities supporting its defense industry, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

According to the statement, the attack was carried out with the support of high-precision, long-range air and sea weapons, as well as attack drones. The airstrike was successful, hitting all designated facilities.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on Wednesday that Ukraine had launched a missile attack using Western long-range weapons on the Taganrog military airfield in the Rostov Region on the morning of December 11, 2024.

The statement said it confirmed that six US-made ATACMS ballistic missiles were involved in the attack. The missiles were shot down by air defenses, and although the ATACMS missile debris did not cause significant damage, some casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this was one of the biggest Russian attacks ever on Ukraine's struggling power grid and proof of why Kyiv needs more support from the West.

The national grid operator said Russia's 12th major attack on the power system this year has damaged power facilities in several regions of Ukraine and forced authorities to impose even longer power cuts on millions of the country's citizens.
