Bringing the most unique folk melodies of Quang Ninh province to stand shoulder to shoulder with Bac Ninh Quan Ho, Song Ma Ho, Nghe Tinh Vi Giam singing, Southern amateur music, etc. is the way that artists and artisans of the province have just made an impression at the Three Regions Folk Song Festival held in Nghe An.
The festival is organized by the Department of Grassroots Culture (Ministry of Culture - Sports and Tourism) in coordination with the Department of Culture - Sports of Nghe An within the framework of the Nghe Tinh Vi Giam Folk Song Festival 2023, taking place from August 1 to August 5 in Vinh City. The festival brings together 29 mass art troupes from 29 provinces and cities across the country, including Quang Ninh. The festival introduces and promotes the quintessence of intangible cultural heritages through folk songs and traditional musical instruments of regions associated with social life, meeting the needs of enjoying spiritual culture of the masses.
The program of the Quang Ninh delegation participating in the Festival includes 5 performances: The performance of Chau Van singing "Co Be Cua Suot" with new lyrics composed by musician Le Hoang Ba and artist Thu Phuong, performed by Thu Phuong - Duy Nghiep - Nhu Huong and a group of men and women; the performance of Dao ethnic folk songs of the Dao people of Ba Che district called "Happy day to welcome guests" (Khe's Tai Peo's) performed by artists Trieu Tien Hung - Ban Thi Hanh; the performance of Xam singing "Following the Party for life", lyrics composed by the late People's Artist Ha Thi Cau, performed by Thu Phuong and a group of men and women; the performance of traditional musical instruments "Cam Xuc Que Huong" arranged by Tran Anh Tuan, performed by Duc Manh and the ethnic orchestra of Ha Long University.
Hat Van and Hat Chau Van are not unique to Quang Ninh, but artists and artisans have known how to renew them, breathing in the breath of Quang Ninh. The Hat Chau Van performance "Co Be Cua Suot" is imbued with the colors of Quang Ninh, introducing many places, the history and culture of Quang Ninh, the tradition of fighting against foreign invaders, especially the feats of the Tran Dynasty on ancient Quang Ninh land. The program has generalized the rich culture of Quang Ninh, a place where the cultural values of the ethnic groups of Quang Ninh converge and spread, contributing to promoting national culture.
The most special is the ancient Then singing performance "Pat phu san soong" (Catching men to weave baskets) translated by Mining Region Artist Ha Thi Ngoc, arranged by To Dinh Hieu, and performed by a group of male and female artists. Through this performance, the Then language of Binh Lieu in particular and the Tay people of Quang Ninh in general are introduced to friends nationwide. The Tay people of Quang Ninh are currently preserving many extremely unique ancient Then rituals, existing in parallel with Then literature and art, which have been adapted and stylized to suit performances on the public stage. Both are indispensable spiritual foods and have become a typical cultural feature of the Tay ethnic community in Quang Ninh.
"Capturing workers to weave baskets" is an excerpt from the Lau Then ritual, telling the story of the Then army selecting workers to go into the forest to get bamboo to weave baskets to carry offerings to heaven. The metaphorical verse combined with the melody of the typical 2-stringed Tinh lute and the rustic performance of the Binh Lieu artisans impressively depicts an excerpt from the Then ritual - a form of performance recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
Quang Ninh is a province with a unique cultural exchange, which is reflected in the diversity of folk songs. The province has almost all the most unique folk songs representing the unique cultural identity of the ethnic groups in Quang Ninh. The program has brought about a distinction with the two-stringed đàn tính, which has a different sound compared to the three-stringed đàn tính in other places.
Artisan To Dinh Hieu, Deputy Director in charge of the Communication - Culture Center of Binh Lieu district, member of the Quang Ninh Province Mass Art Troupe, said: Bringing Then to participate in the 3-region Folk Song Festival has created conditions for the Then Tay Quang Ninh to be introduced to more regions. Then has played the role of a cultural ambassador, contributing to promoting the land, people and culture of Quang Ninh in general, and Binh Lieu district in particular, to friends at home and abroad.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Vinh, Director of Quang Ninh Cultural Center, said: Quang Ninh has many types of folk songs of ethnic minorities. We have selected the most unique types, artisans and artists with good voices to build a drama program to best promote the culture of Quang Ninh ethnic minorities at this festival.
Along with the activities at the Festival, the Quang Ninh Provincial Mass Art Troupe also brought special performances to perform street art at the Closing Ceremony of the Vi Giam Festival 2023. After 5 days of "bringing bells to strike foreign lands", the troupe won a silver medal for the whole group; 1 gold medal for the ancient singing performance "Pat phu san soong", 2 silver medals for the ensemble performance "Cam xuc que huong" and the singing performance "Co be Cua Suot". The two artists Trieu Tien Hung and Ban Thi Hanh received certificates of merit for excellent actors. The troupe's performances left a deep impression on the troupes participating in the festival in particular and the Nghe An audience in general.
