The source confirmed that the rosewood tree had been dead for a long time, lying in the mud at the bottom of the stream, in the buffer zone of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. After discovering it, the local people secretly excavated it at night, selling a part to a broker. When the information began to leak, the rosewood broker proceeded to exploit it to avoid theft.
The newly discovered rosewood logs
On the night of May 17, while the excavation was being accelerated, functional forces including forest rangers and local police suddenly raided. By the morning of May 18, the rosewood tree was lifted from the streambed and transported to the headquarters by official vehicle of the Bo Trach Forest Protection Department.
Mr. Doan Van Ngai, Head of Bo Trach Forest Protection Department, admitted that the authorities controlled the situation and recovered the Dalbergia tonkinensis tree. They are currently completing the relevant procedures to report to superiors.
Go fishing and find rosewood and exploit it at night
Images recorded by local people show that at least 3 pieces of rosewood were recovered, including 2 pieces about 3m long and one shorter piece. According to estimates, the quantity recovered is about 600kg, the value can be up to billions of VND depending on the quality and age of the wood.
The incident reminds us of the “giant sưa tree” that was excavated in Phuc Trach commune in March 2014, as reported by SGGP Newspaper. At that time, the sưa tree had a diameter of more than 1m and a length of nearly 2m, and the dealer asked for a price of more than 17 billion VND. After controversy and investigation, the sưa tree was recovered and put on display at the Quang Binh Museum, as evidence of the “sầu chaos” period that once caused chaos in Phong Nha - Ke Bang forest.
