New Speaker of the Thai House of Representatives Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said on July 5 that the country's National Assembly will vote to elect a new prime minister on July 13.
The announcement was made a day after Mr. Wan Noor was elected Speaker of the new House of Representatives and President of the National Assembly (including the House of Representatives and the Senate).
In this position, Mr. Wan Noor is responsible for choosing the time to hold a joint meeting of Thailand's two houses to vote to elect the next prime minister.
On July 4, Mr. Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said he was not sure how many times the prime minister election could be repeated if the prime minister candidate of the Malaysia Forward Party (MFP) Pita Limjaroenrat did not receive the necessary support.
Mr Wan Noor said the eight-party alliance would support Mr Pita but if he did not receive a majority of votes from both houses, Mr Pita's nomination could be repeated several times.
Mr Wan Noor admitted that if repeated efforts still fail, then further solutions must be found because the Speaker cannot push for the same nomination repeatedly.
Up to now, Mr. Pita Limjaroenrat, the Prime Minister candidate of the Progressive Party (MFP), is still the person with the most chances to become the 30th Prime Minister of Thailand.
The eight-party coalition led by the MFP currently holds a majority in the House of Representatives with 312 out of 500 seats. However, to be elected, Mr. Pita needs at least 376 votes from both houses, including 500 deputies and 250 senators.
