(CLO) The bushfire in Grampians National Park in the Australian state of Victoria has broken out strongly, forcing hundreds of families to evacuate and many houses to lose power.

Residents in the affected areas were advised to protect themselves and take shelter, according to a VicEmergency alert issued on Friday morning. “Extreme heat can kill you before the fire hits,” the agency said in a statement.

According to ABC, representatives from the State Control Centre estimated the fire area had increased from 6,000 hectares to 74,000 hectares in just one week - equivalent to an area of Singapore.

Hundreds of homes were left without power in the Moyston, Willaura and Pomonal areas after a major power grid system was destroyed. A spokesperson for electricity distributor Powercor said 363 customers were currently without power. "We are working with emergency services to safely access the area to assess the damage and carry out repairs," a Powercor representative said.

Additionally, the Mt Williams communications tower was destroyed on Christmas Day, resulting in disruption or complete loss of telephone communications in the area.

More than 600 firefighters, including about 100 from other states, skipped the Christmas holiday to focus on protecting homes and lives in the fire zone.

The state of emergency remains in place and authorities warn of the risk of further fires if the dry weather and high temperatures continue. Authorities advise people to strictly follow safety guidelines and stay informed from official sources.

The Grampians fires have once again highlighted the severity of nature and highlighted the urgent need to strengthen disaster response measures in the face of worsening climate change.
