Within the framework of cooperation, SP is authorized by Sabeco to install and operate rooftop solar power systems at 9 breweries including: Cu Chi (expansion), Lam Dong, Ha Tinh, Hanoi, Tay Do, Vinh Long, Nguyen Chi Thanh (HCMC), Bac Lieu and Quang Ngai. The project is expected to be completed and put into operation at the end of the third quarter.

This brings the total number of factories in the Sabeco system using solar energy to 17 by the end of 2023. The entire rooftop solar power system installed at 17 breweries is estimated to meet nearly 23% of the electricity consumption at the factories, helping to save 25 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to 18,000 tons of CO2 reduced each year. The project will contribute to the company's goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

Previously, in 2020, Sabeco launched phase 1 of the Rooftop Solar Power Project. The company invested more than VND107 billion in rooftop solar power systems with a maximum capacity of 9 MWp at factories in Cu Chi, Dak Lak, Phu Yen, Quy Nhon, Song Lam, Khanh Hoa, Can Tho, Soc Trang and Ben Tre. The success of phase 1 was the decisive factor for the project's expansion in phase 2 with 9 more breweries invested, in which the highest capacity was up to 10.44 MWp (Megawatt-peak).

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between Sabeco and SP, Mr. Bennett Neo, General Director of Sabeco emphasized: "Sabeco always aims for sustainable initiatives and solutions to strengthen the company's strengths and ensure long-term growth goals."

The CEO listed that over the years, the company has implemented various ESG (environmental, social and governance) initiatives through four pillars of sustainable development including consumption, conservation, culture and country. Sabeco also presented the "Best Brewery Management and Production" award to encourage breweries to incorporate sustainable development thinking in all production and business activities in line with the Corporation's vision, as well as Sabeco's commitment to support national green growth goals in the 2021-2030 period.

“By leveraging comprehensive sustainable energy solutions, we look forward to supporting Sabeco in its journey towards energy efficiency and together creating a sustainable future for Vietnam,” said Brandon Chia, Managing Director, Sustainable Energy Solutions (Southeast Asia and Australia), SP Group.

To optimize the amount of solar power generated and used at the breweries, both parties will jointly study the feasibility of integrating an energy storage system (ESS) at the installed breweries. Integrating an ESS will help Sabeco manage supply disruptions, as solar power can fluctuate due to changing weather conditions.

In addition to using renewable energy, the leading enterprise in the Vietnamese beverage industry has implemented many initiatives to minimize the impact on the environment. In particular, improvements in the use of water resources in production have helped reduce the amount of water used to produce each liter of beer from 5 liters (in 2018) to less than 3 liters (in 2022). In addition, Sabeco has switched to using biomass fuel from plants (such as rice husks, sawdust, cashew shells and leaves) instead of boilers burning fossil fuels. The enterprise also applies a CIP wastewater treatment system, or applies sustainable packaging solutions (thinner cans, lighter cartons and beer bottles) and reuses bottles, beer cans, etc.

Saigon Beer - Alcohol - Beverage Corporation also promotes sustainable development initiatives focusing on the local community where the factory's production and business activities are located. Most recently, the "Lighting up the Countryside" Project, part of a 3-year strategic cooperation framework between Sabeco and the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, has built 34 km of solar-powered street lights in 34 rural areas in 34 provinces and cities, providing a sustainable and safe living environment for more than 210,000 beneficiary households. The project is expected to expand to 2023 with the goal of installing more than 39 km of solar-powered street lights.

After 148 years of establishment and development in the beverage industry, Sabeco currently owns 26 factories, 11 member trading companies and a network of hundreds of thousands of points of sale across the country. The list of beer brands loved by Vietnamese consumers includes Lac Viet Beer, Saigon Chill Beer, 333 Beer, Saigon Special Beer, Saigon Export Beer, Saigon Lager Beer and Saigon Gold Beer, of which Saigon Beer has won many domestic and international awards.
