Charging iPhone overnight, what warning does Apple give?

Charging your iPhone overnight is dangerous, potentially causing burns or even fires. So what does Apple recommend to users? Let's find out now.

According to Apple, you should only charge your iPhone in places with air circulation, such as on a flat table. You should not charge it on a thick blanket because the iPhone often heats up when charging, so if this heat cannot spread out, it can cause burns or even explosions.

Apple does not recommend leaving your phone charging overnight. However, it does advise: "Avoid touching your device, power adapter, or wireless charger while it is powered on or connected to a power source for extended periods of time."

Furthermore, the American technology company also said that users should not sleep on the device, power adapter, wireless charger or place them under blankets, pillows, or close to the body when the device is connected to a power source.

Kent Fire Service, UK, warns of the dangers of leaving your phone on a charging pad or plugged into a charger while you sleep, regardless of where it is placed.

One of the agency's employees posted a video on TikTok explaining the main reason why users should only charge their phones while awake. Charging an iPhone overnight is dangerous because "users can't smell anything while sleeping, so there's no way to know for sure when a fire will break out."

Another reason not to charge your iPhone while you sleep is that it can affect the lifespan of your device. Phones typically take up to two hours to fully charge, but charging them overnight can leave them plugged in for eight hours or more. That increases the amount of heat the battery is exposed to, which can shorten its lifespan.

So users should either unplug their iPhone if they wake up in the night or change their charging habits altogether. Alternatives include keeping the charger on their desk so they can unplug it as soon as the phone reaches 100%.

From iOS 13 onwards, the tech giant Apple has updated a new feature called “optimized battery charging”, which will limit the charging process when the battery reaches 80%. This limits the impact of overnight charging and increases the iPhone battery life.
