On April 1st, Samsung Electronics announced the appointment of TM Roh, Head of Mobile Experience (MX), as Acting Head of Device Experience (DX).

The announcement came after the death of his predecessor, Han Jong-Hee, on March 25th. Roh will temporarily lead the appliance business until the Samsung board of directors selects a replacement. This division includes the TV, home appliance, and smartphone businesses.

Before his death, Han also served as co-CEO of Samsung. This left Jun Young-hyun as the sole CEO of the South Korean company, leading its struggling semiconductor business.

"Currently, no decision has been made on whether to maintain the co-CEO structure as before," a Samsung spokesperson told Reuters .

Now 56 years old, Roh has served as head of Samsung's mobile division since 2020. Amid slow growth and fierce competition, Samsung says he has been "responsible for emerging smartphone markets," including AI devices and foldable phones.

"Samsung Electronics plans to fill the leadership vacancy in the DX division through this restructuring," the company said in a press release.

In addition to appointing Roh, Samsung also brought in Choi Won-joon as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for its mobile division. He will also continue to hold his current positions as head of R&D and head of global mobile operations.

The company also selected Kim Cheol-gi, formerly the Director of Marketing Strategy for the Mobile Experience division, to lead its digital home appliance business, which includes appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines.

According to Bloomberg , this reshuffle helps ease the burden on CEO Jun Young-hyun. Since Han's sudden death, Jun has become the sole CEO of Samsung. Meanwhile, the overall strategy and direction of the South Korean company are decided by Chairman Lee Jae-yong.

The leadership reshuffle comes at a crucial time as Samsung struggles to compete with SK Hynix, a supplier of AI memory chips to major clients like Nvidia. In the mobile sector, Samsung is also competing with Apple and Chinese companies for market leadership.
