Cam Khe Medical Center (Phu Tho) has just successfully performed a cesarean section for a pregnant woman, D., 34 years old, residing in Cam Khe commune. The baby was born at 10:00 a.m. on July 1, 2025 by cesarean section, weighing 5 kg, belonging to the large fetus group. The baby girl was born rosy, cried loudly, had good reflexes and is being cared for and closely monitored to prevent the risk of hypoglycemia - a common complication in large children.
According to her family, during her pregnancy, the mother gained 20 kg and her health was stable. When she was 38 weeks and 6 days pregnant, she showed signs of labor and was taken to Cam Khe District Medical Center by her family. This was her second birth; previously in 2017, she had a cesarean section for a baby boy weighing 4.1 kg.

Doctor CKII Ha Thi Hai Huong - Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Cam Khe Medical Center said: According to the National Guidelines on Reproductive Health Care Services (2016), a large fetus is defined as one weighing 3.5 kg or more. A large fetus poses many risks to both mother and baby, especially during labor and after birth. In this case, mother and baby need to be closely monitored to promptly handle the risk of hemorrhage in the mother due to poor uterine contraction and hypoglycemia in the baby.
Dr. Huong also recommends that during pregnancy, pregnant women need to have full check-ups to monitor the development of the fetus, thereby promptly indicating appropriate birth methods and limiting complications during birth. Maintaining a reasonable diet, appropriate exercise and controlling weight gain will help protect the health of both mother and baby.
According to research statistics from domestic and foreign obstetric departments, the weight of a newborn baby in a mother with adequate nutrition will depend on the genetics of the breed.
For Vietnamese people, the average weight of a newborn baby will fluctuate around 3.2 kg, and it may also depend on the following factors: Mother's health and physical strength: two mothers have the same diet, but the taller and healthier mother will often have a bigger and healthier baby; The next baby (second child) often weighs more than the previous one; Mother's illness: if the mother is obese, especially if she has diabetes, the baby's weight will definitely exceed the normal level.
