AI is just a tool, teachers are always the central factor
In recent years, Khan Academy - the world's leading freeeducation platform has continuously researched and developed the artificial intelligence tool Khanmigo, with the expectation of turning AI into a powerful assistant for teachers and tutors of all students around the world.
Khanmigo has been piloted in public schools in the US, Brazil, India and the Philippines. Teachers use Khanmigo to save time preparing lessons, grouping students, writing comments, building assessment criteria, etc. Meanwhile, students learn at their own pace. Khanmigo provides step-by-step support to find solutions, instead of just providing answers like a typical AI tool.

At the Open Mathematics Day 2025 (MOD) organized by the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), The Vietnam Foundation and the Kien Giang Department of Education and Training, a representative of Khan Academy USA presented in detail 25 specialized tools that Khanmigo provides for teachers, divided into 5 groups: Planning (lesson plans, learning objectives, etc.); Creating learning materials (tests, multiple choice questions, class newsletters, etc.); Personalizing content for each group of students; Supporting the development of individual education plans; Self-study to consolidate knowledge.
“When we think about the role of AI in education, we follow a consistent principle: Humans first, AI second,” said Emily Goldman, Khan Academy’s Director of Strategy and Operations for International. “AI is a tool – powerful – but not a destination. What matters most to us is how students can gain deep understanding, build confidence, and learn on their own. Teachers are always at the center of that journey.”
Khan Academy developed Khanmigo to help teachers save time, reduce the burden of classroom management and administration, and focus on what only humans can do: inspire, lead, and connect emotionally with students. Khan Academy understands that bringing AI to education is a big task and needs to be done safely and responsibly. So from the beginning, the Khanmigo team built in controls, feedback mechanisms, and transparency standards to support teachers, parents, and education administrators proactively.
Promoting comprehensive digital capacity development for Vietnamese teachers and students with AI in Vietnamese
In the context of the Vietnamese Government strongly promoting digital transformation in education, with a series of policies such as Resolution 57-NQ/TW, Project 131/QD-TTg on the application of information technology in education and training, and Circular 02/2025/TT-BGDDT on the digital competency framework for learners, the application of AI in the classroom has become an inevitable step.
Currently, Khanmigo is directly integrated into the Khan Academy platform, which is already familiar to millions of teachers and students around the world, including Vietnam. As of 2024, Vietnam has become the second country in the world (after the United States) in terms of the number of users of this platform, showing great potential when bringing Khanmigo into actual teaching.
With carefully considered technological innovations, combined with Khan Academy's masterful learning philosophy, Khan Academy representatives believe that they can accompany Vietnamese teachers, students and education administrators to promote real educational innovation in the AI era.
For teachers, the Khan Academy and Khanmigo platforms provide a comprehensive set of teaching support tools: from lesson design, content personalization, to support for individual education planning and student assessment. Sharing with The Gioi Va Viet Nam Newspaper, Ms. Emily Goldman revealed that Khan Academy USA is testing Khanmigo in Vietnamese, opening up a major breakthrough in the ability to access global educational technology for Vietnamese teachers and students. An artificial intelligence tool that understands Vietnamese, communicates naturally and understands the general education context will be a powerful lever for personalized learning - a core orientation of the new general education program in Vietnam.
“We are looking to bring Khanmigo to Vietnam with the goal of ensuring that every teaching and learning experience is best suited to the real-world needs of teachers, students, and the entire Vietnamese education system,” she said. “Khanmigo can help teachers prepare lessons and provide quick feedback, support students to learn at their own pace, and provide education administrators with an scalable tool to implement effective personalized learning.”
Thus, with Khanmigo operating in Vietnamese, Vietnamese teachers and students will have the opportunity to apply artificial intelligence to teaching and learning responsibly and effectively, in accordance with the requirements set by the Ministry of Education and Training in the competency group "Application of artificial intelligence" - a new point of the current Digital Competency Framework.
It can be said that the combination of the mastery learning platform (Khan Academy) and the educational AI assistant (Khanmigo) is a comprehensive learning ecosystem, helping to realize the building of digital capacity in every lesson, every lesson plan, and throughout the professional development of teachers.
Currently, The Vietnam Foundation – the official and sole representative of Khan Academy in Vietnam – is actively collaborating with Khan Academy USA to promote the deployment of the Vietnamese version of Khanmigo. The goal is to bring this tool closer to 1.6 million teachers and more than 20 million students in Vietnam. Through these strategic cooperation activities, the VNF and Khan Academy teams always believe that high-quality education should not be reserved for a few – but for everyone. And when witnessing the positive reception from the Vietnamese teacher and student community, we are even more confident that this journey has just begun.
