Lunin could replace Onana at MU. |
According to Opta, Andre Onana has the worst clean sheet percentage and second-worst save percentage in Man Utd's history since 2003/04, of those who have played more than 900 minutes. In that context, Man Utd are considering recruiting Andriy Lunin, Real Madrid's second-choice goalkeeper, as a potential replacement.
Recently, the Spanish newspaper Defensa Central provided detailed information about Lunin's possible departure. The Ukrainian goalkeeper's agent Jorge Mendes is actively looking for a new destination in Europe, in the context that Lunin does not want to continue to be a supporting actor for Thibaut Courtois.
Although Lunin's priority is to continue staying at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid are also willing to part with him if they receive an offer of 25-30 million euros. This fee is considered a "bargain" compared to the quality and potential of the 26-year-old goalkeeper, who was once described by Courtois and the Real coaching staff as "a great goalkeeper".
Lunin joined Real Madrid in 2018 and has made some significant contributions in recent seasons, especially during Courtois' injury spell. He has won two La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues with "Los Blancos", despite being a backup option for the most part.
However, this deal depends heavily on Man Utd's ability to liquidate Onana. The Manchester team is negotiating with clubs in Saudi Arabia, including Neom SC, to sell the Cameroon goalkeeper. However, Onana's salary of £200,000/week and his contract until 2028 makes it difficult to let him go, especially when he still wants to stay at Old Trafford.
With the pressure from the PSR financial regulations, Man Utd need to quickly solve the financial problem to clear the way to welcome Lunin. If successful, this could be a wise and strategic contract, bringing the necessary stability to the "Red Devils" goal in the 2025/26 season.
