The Ministry of Construction has just sent an official dispatch to Vietnam Railways Corporation regarding the resumption of international passenger trains between Vietnam and China.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Construction agrees with the proposal to restore the operation of international passenger trains T8701/MR2 and T8702/MR1 on the Gia Lam (Vietnam) - Nanning (China) railway route through the Dong Dang (Vietnam) - Pingxiang (China) border gate pair according to the proposal of Vietnam Railway Corporation.
Intermodal passenger train operations are based on compliance with current legal regulations and regulations of relevant international treaties to which Vietnam is a member, ensuring security and safety of train operations.
Vietnam Railways Corporation is responsible for reporting to the competent authority and proactively notifying the Chinese side for implementation.
Previously, Vietnam Railways Corporation sent a document requesting the Ministry of Construction to resume the Vietnam - China international passenger train after temporarily suspending operations since February 5, 2020 to ensure prevention of the Covid-19 epidemic.
According to Vietnam Railways Corporation, immediately after the Covid-19 epidemic was controlled in the two countries, this unit proposed to the Chinese side to restore international passenger transport by rail to serve the travel and trade needs of people and businesses of the two countries.
The Corporation has also proactively reported to the Government, the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant agencies to include the content of restoring international passenger transport by rail in the talks between leaders at all levels between the two countries and was expressed in the "Vietnam - China Joint Statement" during the visit to Vietnam by General Secretary and President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping in April 2025.
On May 13, 2025, Vietnam Railways Corporation joined the Dong Dang - Lang Son Border Gate Economic Zone Management Board to negotiate with the People's Government Delegation of Pingxiang City - Guangxi - China.
The two sides have agreed on the technical conditions and expected time to restore the Vietnam - China international passenger train with a gauge of 1435 mm through the Dong Dang - Bang Tuong border gate on May 25, 2025.
It is known that Vietnam Railways Corporation has reviewed, inspected and supplemented conditions on infrastructure, human resources, and train routes from Dong Dang station to Gia Lam station to be ready to organize international passenger train operations.
