Joseph Schooling announced his retirement via social media. The Singaporean swimmer decided to retire at the age of 28.
" Today, I mark a new beginning as I end my swimming career.
"I am grateful for the experiences that swimming has brought to my life. The glorious victories, the bitter defeats. They have shaped me and made me resilient as I move on to the next chapter of my life ," Schooling wrote.
The Olympic champion thanked his family, coaches, teammates and fans for their support throughout his career. The 28-year-old swimmer believes his career has inspired many people to pursue their dreams despite the difficulties.
" I'm excited to explore new passions, take on new challenges, and see where life takes me. Thank you to all my supporters who have always been there for me. I hope everyone will join me on this next adventure ," Shooling added.
Schooling announced his retirement.
The Singapore Swimming Association thanked Schooling for his dedication. It wrote: " Thank you for all the sacrifices you and your family have made, for the medals, the records and the immense pride we all feel every time we see the Singapore flag raised ."
Joseph Schooling was born in 1995 and is a Singaporean athlete. He became famous at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At that time, Schooling surprised everyone by beating the world's top swimmers such as Michael Phelps, Laszlo Cseh and Chad Le Clos to win the gold medal in the 100m butterfly. He set an Olympic record with a time of 50.39 seconds.
Joseph Schooling won 29 SEA Games gold medals and 3 Asian Games gold medals. The swimmer broke and held many records in swimming. He is the current Asian record holder in the men's 50m and 100m butterfly.
Schooling participated in the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam. He won 2 gold medals and 1 bronze medal. However, this athlete was later discovered using marijuana while in Hanoi . He had to publicly apologize for this incident and return all the awards.
At SEA Games 32, Schooling did not participate.
