Seagate Unveils 36TB Hard Drive Running on HAMR Technology
Just a month after launching its 32TB hard drive, Seagate continues to impress with the Exos M 36TB hard drive, currently the largest capacity HDD on the market. This new hard drive is designed specifically for data centers, serving large customers such as Microsoft or AWS.
Notably, Seagate achieved this 'huge' capacity thanks to Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology and the Mozaic 3+ platform, allowing storage densities of up to 3.6TB per platter. The company is also confident that it will soon reach the 10TB per platter milestone, paving the way for 100TB hard drives in the future.
Not stopping there, Seagate CEO Dave Mosley also revealed that the company has successfully tested a density of 6 TB per disk in the lab, meaning that 60 TB hard drives will soon become a reality.
Seagate says HAMR reduces costs by 25% and power consumption by 60% per TB, helping HDDs remain cost-competitive with SSDs, even though SSDs have an advantage in performance and storage density.
Currently, the 36TB hard drive is mainly for business needs and there are no plans for retail sales. However, with these great advances, Seagate is affirming its leading position in the field of data storage, promising to bring efficient and cost-saving storage solutions to users.
