Chinese researchers have announced the cloning of a new species of monkey, a major breakthrough in primate research. The monkeys used in the study were cynomolgus macaques, or long-tailed macaques, a common primate species in biomedical research.
First, the researchers established nine stem cell lines using cells taken from 7-day-old blastocysts. They then placed these cell lines in culture to enhance their ability to differentiate into different cell types. The stem cells were also labeled with green and yellow fluorescent proteins so the researchers could identify which tissues had developed from the stem cells.
They eventually selected a specific subset of stem cells to create embryos, which they then implanted into female monkeys. The resulting monkey had cat-like green eyes and fingertips that glowed yellow, corresponding to the fluorescent protein labels (pictured). According to the Chinese researchers, the monkey contained a high proportion of stem cells, something that had previously only been successfully done in mice.
