TPO - Due to environmental pollution from plastic waste, along with the scarcity and high cost of construction materials, a group of students from Tra Vinh University came up with the idea of producing bricks from recycled plastic.

Brick products made from plastic waste by a group of 4 students from Tra Vinh University, including: Nguyen Thai Nguyen , Dang Chi Hao, Ly Kim Lin, Huynh Thi Diem Phuong. This project won 3rd prize in the 2024 Startup Ideas Competition for Tra Vinh University students. Currently, the brick products made from plastic waste have been sent for quality inspection.

Master Nguyen Van Vu An, Director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Tra Vinh University) assessed that the project of bricks made from plastic waste is a creative and potential idea. By recycling waste plastic into bricks, the project not only helps reduce environmental pollution but also creates a sustainable and environmentally friendly construction product.

Nguyen Thai Nguyen, a second-year student majoring in Electricity (from Cang Long District, Tra Vinh), a member of the group, said that bricks made from recycled plastic have the advantages of being light, durable and highly resistant to force. In particular, the product is waterproof, fireproof and has good heat insulation. To complete the brick, first create a mold and then fill the mold with the mixture of raw materials. Next, use a hydraulic press to compress tightly to remove air and shape, then dry in the sun for about a week.

With the advantage of the Mekong Delta region, the group of young people took advantage of local available raw materials, such as sea sand to replace river sand to help limit landslides; ash from thermal power plants; using rice husk ash can reduce the toxicity and pollution of fly ash to create bricks. Therefore, the group used cement, fly ash, rice husk ash, sea sand, dust marble, floor marble and plastic mixed together in the right proportions until they reached a smooth and flexible consistency and then pressed them into bricks.

According to Thai Nguyen, the value of the product is that each brick produced means a certain amount of plastic waste is recycled. The product has a competitive price and good quality, helping to save costs for construction projects, contributing to protecting a green, clean, and sustainable living environment for future generations. In addition, the product helps reduce the amount of plastic released into the environment, the production process consumes less energy than traditional brick production, reducing CO2 emissions.
