According to the 2023 Open Doors Report by the Institute of InternationalEducation (IIE), the number of Vietnamese students at US universities and colleges will increase by 5.7% to 21,900 students in the 2022-2023 academic year, according to the US Embassy in Vietnam.

Vietnam also continues to rank second globally in the number of students studying at community colleges in the US, accounting for 7.6% of the total number of international students studying at these schools. Vietnam ranks fourth globally with 14,295 students studying college and bachelor's programs. Science , technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as Business/Management are still the fields of study most studied by Vietnamese students in the US. The percentages of Vietnamese students studying STEM and Business/Management are 47.6% and 24.7%, respectively.

International students choosing STEM majors are increasing
Overall, the 2022-2023 school year marks the second consecutive year since the pandemic that the number of international students in the United States has increased, with new international student enrollments up more than 14%. The increase was recorded across the United States, with 48 out of 50 states seeing increases in new student enrollments. International students now make up 6% of the total student population at U.S. colleges and universities, with more than 1 million students from more than 230 countries.
Through a new five-year project, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is partnering with the Ministry of Education and Training to modernize and internationalize Vietnam's higher education, the US Embassy in Vietnam said.
The project will provide support to improve the quality of education, including STEM education, and promote digital transformation at the policy level as well as in a number of higher education institutions, and upgrade academic programs to meet workforce quality requirements and academic accreditation standards.
The U.S. Mission to Vietnam will also launch a separate exchange program to promote innovation in technical education at Vietnam’s community colleges as well as expand English language programs and STEM education activities for students from kindergarten through high school.
