Jannik Sinner made an impressive return to the Italian Open in Rome with four straight sets. After more than three months out of action, Sinner claimed his first win over Mariano Navone in the second round and went on to beat Dutchman Jesper de Jong 6-4, 6-2 on the night of 12 May.

In front of a raucous Italian crowd at Campo Centrale, Sinner lost a break in the first set but quickly recovered. In the second set, De Jong injured his right wrist after a fall, but continued to play despite the limitations.

Sinner showed great sportsmanship by helping De Jong up and handing him a towel. Despite his injury, De Jong continued to play but with difficulty.

Sinner said after the match: "It was a completely different match to the first match, different conditions. I felt like I started the match very well, then I relaxed and he played a little bit better. I tried to understand what was going on and luckily I broke his serve in the ninth game, which gave me more confidence to continue playing.

The second set went like that. De Jong injured himself. He's a great player, a great person. I wish De Jong all the best and hope it's nothing too serious."

With the 1 hour 35 minute victory, Sinner extended his winning streak to 23 matches and maintained an impressive 61-0 record against players outside the Top 20 since the 2023 US Open.

Sinner was comfortable and accurate in his second match since winning a major at the Australian Open in January. He was aggressive on returns, winning 71% of De Jong's second-serve points. Sinner stayed close to the line to call the shots at key moments and sealed victory on his first match point.

Sinner, who has reached the fourth round in Rome for the fourth time, will face Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine is a semi-finalist in Madrid, having beaten Sebastian Ofner 6-2, 6-4. Cerundolo beat Sinner in their previous meeting in Rome in 2023, and the two are tied 2-2.
