Digitalization - the pillar of building a smart hospital model

Faced with increasing risks of disease, digitalization towards a smart hospital model becomes a vital factor to improve medical examination and treatment capacity.

Success stories from healthcare centers in the US

The Daughters of Mary of the Immaculate Conception health care and social security complex in Connecticut (USA), which has up to 5 large buildings providing treatment and health care services, once incurred huge energy costs.

Karen Kulak, Director of Operations at Daughters of Mary, shares that the buildings house patients who require special care, so it is necessary to ensure a constant and stable power supply for high-tech equipment to function properly. This is a significant expense and requires facilities to reduce energy costs and use more reliable energy systems. That is where Daughters of Mary and Schneider Electric come in.

Schneider Electric has been working with the facility since 2020. To address their energy sustainability and cost savings, Schneider Electric partnered with Citizens Energy Corporation to implement an innovative microgrid solution, the first of its kind in Connecticut. This is a smart grid that can be connected to the city’s grid or stand alone.

Digitalization is key to making healthcare facilities more efficient and sustainable

The “heart” of this microgrid system is the Schneider Electric Energy Control Center, equipped with smart switches and PowerLogic energy meters. Based on the Internet of Things (IoT) architecture platform called EcoStruxure developed by Schneider Electric, the hospital operator can monitor and predict energy demand and automatically coordinate energy use from different sources to optimize costs and ensure operational safety. For example, during peak hours when grid electricity prices are high, the system will prioritize the use of electricity from renewable energy sources. During off-peak hours, the system will draw electricity from the city grid to charge the energy storage battery system.

The key technologies used to control this smart energy management system are EcoStruxure Microgrid Operation and EcoStruxure Microgrid Advisor. The system can also automatically adjust the capacity of air conditioning, ventilation, heating... based on usage needs, number of people present, outdoor temperature and other related factors.

The effectiveness is evident on Daughters of Mary’s utility bills. After the system was put into operation, the medical facility saved 18% on energy costs compared to the previous year. Daughters of Mary can now operate on 100% renewable energy even when the city’s power grid is interrupted. The solution also generates nearly 500,000 kWh of additional solar energy each year, enough to power 45 US households for a year, while reducing CO2 emissions by 1,300 tons per year.

Model of “Hospital of the Future”

Daughters of Mary is a clear example of the “hospital of the future” model that many major hospitals around the world are aiming for, with the pillar of applying digital solutions to care facilities.

In Schneider Electric's vision, a "hospital of the future" is not simply "having technology", but must form an intelligent, flexible and multi-connected ecosystem, aiming at four core goals: resilience in the event of incidents, efficiency, patient-centricity and sustainable development.

The “hospital of the future” focuses on the goals of efficiency, cost reduction and resilience in the event of an incident.

Resilience means that the operating system operates continuously, without interruption, even under adverse conditions such as power outages or technical failures.

Meanwhile, efficiency is demonstrated through optimizing processes, proactively responding in all situations by applying appropriate technology.

Patient-centricity: The patient experience also needs to improve, given the increasing expectations. Technology now allows patients to adjust the lighting, temperature in their rooms, and other care processes are also personalized.

In terms of sustainability, reducing emissions and using renewable energy not only helps hospitals reduce management and maintenance costs, but also improves their ability to analyze data, identify problems faster and intervene when incidents occur.

EcoStruxure - Schneider Electric's powerful platform

To build the “hospital of the future,” Schneider Electric relies on EcoStruxure, an IoT architecture platform consisting of three layers: connected devices; edge management (on-site data processing solutions); and applications, analytics and services. This is the core infrastructure that helps connect, monitor and optimize all systems in the hospital.

One specific solution within the EcoStruxure platform is the EcoStruxure Microgrid Operation – an energy management system for microgrids that the Daughters of Mary healthcare cluster has adopted. This solution helps the healthcare facility maintain operations even when the main grid fails, by switching to island mode. This is extremely important for hospitals, as even a minute of interruption can threaten the lives of patients.

In addition, EcoStruxure Microgrid Operation helps manage the operation and coordination of power sources (grid, batteries, renewable energy, etc.), while providing monitoring and control capabilities to optimize real-time electricity usage.

EcoStruxure Microgrid Advisor is an energy management, integrated with weather forecast information and electricity price frames, using AI algorithms to analyze and provide operating scenarios to optimize energy costs and make the most of on-site renewable energy sources. Some applications of EcoStruxure Microgrid Advisor include: providing recommendations to reduce energy costs and optimize performance, using machine learning models to forecast consumption loads, renewable energy output, electricity price fluctuations, etc.

Following the global trend, hospitals in Vietnam are also in the process of strong digital transformation. Hospitals need to invest in smart energy management systems to ensure efficiency and sustainability. Digital transformation in the healthcare sector is no longer an option, but a mandatory requirement.

Schneider Electric is actively supporting hospitals in digitalizing to optimize energy and improve operations. In addition to providing a technical platform, Schneider Electric also accompanies medical facilities in the process of technology transfer and consulting on digitalization strategies suitable for the reality of each medical facility. The ultimate goal is that hospitals operate more and more effectively and each patient receives better care every day.
