Solskjaer will rescue Isak, Gyokeres?

The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) is considering potential candidates to replace national team head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, following recent poor results.

Solskjaer is currently unemployed after being sacked by Besiktas at the end of August, ending his short tenure at the Turkish club.

In the early morning of October 14, Sweden lost 0-1 to Kosovo, which almost closed the door to directly participating in the 2026 World Cup. After 4 matches in Group B of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Europe, Sweden - with two expensive guns in attack, Isak and Gyokeres - is ranked last with only 1 point. They are 9 points behind the top team, Switzerland.

However, Sweden still has a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup through the play-off thanks to their performance in the Nations League, so SvFF wants to act before it's too late to save the situation.

Before the October fixtures, SvFF had publicly backed Tomasson – whose contract runs until the end of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers – but two defeats to Switzerland and Kosovo were the last straw. SvFF Director of Football Kim Källström began looking at alternatives to Tomasson, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer emerging as the frontrunner.

The former Manchester United manager is currently free after being sacked by Besiktas in August. With his Premier League managerial experience and ability to motivate, Solskjaer is seen as a strong candidate. The cultural similarities between Norway and Sweden are also an advantage.

In addition to Solskjaer, Graham Potter, Olof Mellberg and Per-Mathias Høgmo are also candidates. Sweden's recent poor results are likely to force the SvFF to act, especially when the 2026 World Cup play-offs are due to begin in the next few months.
