The US proposed a draft resolution of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on October 21, which stated that Israel has the right to self-defense and asked Iran to stop exporting weapons to those who "threaten peace and security throughout the region".
The draft also calls for the protection of civilians - including those seeking to reach safety; notes that countries must comply with international law and calls for "continued, full and unimpeded" aid shipments to the Gaza Strip.
It is not yet clear whether or when the US plans to put the draft resolution to a vote.
According to regulations, to be passed, a resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes from Russia, China, the US, France or the UK - the permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The move came after the US vetoed a Brazilian-drafted resolution on October 18 calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas to allow aid to reach Gaza.
