Waiting for you
It has been a week since her daughter was hospitalized due to an intestinal infection, but Ms. Dang Thi Huong (working at Lac Ty Company Limited, Hau Giang Province) still cannot forget the moment her daughter fell ill, vomiting violently until she was unconscious. In room 919 (Digestive Department, Can Tho Children's Hospital), she sat and lulled her daughter to sleep and told us the story.
“That day was the afternoon of June 19, my husband and I were still at work when my parents called to advise us to come home early to buy medicine for our child. As soon as we got home, I saw the child vomit something lumpy like jelly. I immediately guessed that the child had a cold stomach, so my family quickly packed up and took the child to the hospital for examination. There, the doctor said that the condition was serious and that we had to be hospitalized immediately for monitoring,” Ms. Huong recalled.
After discussing with her husband, Ms. Huong asked the company for a few days off to take care of the child, so that her husband could work with peace of mind. However, every night, when her husband came to look after the child, the female worker did not dare to sleep, only daring to doze for 1-2 hours.
Also having a child being treated for digestive disease at this hospital, Mr. So Oanh Tha (working at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Cau Ke district, Tra Vinh province) said: “My baby is 6 months old, just 2 months ago he was hospitalized for treatment and now he has relapsed. Afraid that my wife will not be able to take care of him, I asked for a few days off from work to take my child to Can Tho for treatment to cure the disease. Since the disease broke out, the baby has lost a lot of weight, there are nights when he cries until he falls asleep in his mother's arms.”
Before that, Mr. Oanh Tha had known about the alarming situation of digestive diseases in the West, especially during the changing seasons. His family always paid attention to hygiene, especially in eating and drinking, but still could not avoid it. Currently, Mr. Tha only hopes that his child will soon recover and grow up healthy, and at the same time, he can return to work to take care of his family.
Prevention is better than cure
Speaking to Lao Dong, specialist doctor I Tran Le Thao Nguyen (Digestive Department, Can Tho Children's Hospital) informed that in the past 2 weeks, the number of cases of digestive diseases requiring hospitalization has skyrocketed. The Digestive Department has 110 beds, but almost all of them are full of pediatric patients. On average, the department continues to receive more than 20 hospitalizations each day, with the peak number reaching 40 cases per day.
Doctors also received late hospitalizations, children with sepsis or worse, septic shock, who had to be transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for timely treatment and monitoring.
“Normally, the number of digestive diseases increases when the sunny season changes to the rainy season. Therefore, at this time, parents should observe and take care of their children carefully, paying attention to signs such as continuous vomiting, diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, etc. Each digestive disease comes from different causes such as food, allergies, bacterial infections, etc., so it is best for parents to take their children to see a doctor promptly for early diagnosis and treatment,” said Dr. Nguyen.
According to Dr. Nguyen, each parent should take the initiative to prevent their children from getting sick rather than treating them when they get sick. The advice given includes eating hygienically, drinking plenty of water (boiled and cooled), eating a nutritious diet, getting vaccinated, etc. "The hospital not only receives patients from Can Tho but also from neighboring provinces, so during this period, doctors and nurses are working hard to treat the children so they can recover quickly," the doctor added.
