Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu opens with a record-low opening.

The latest Star Wars film has had a less-than-stellar debut at the North American box office.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , the film "The Mandalorian and Grogu" officially premiered in North America during the Memorial Day holiday in 2026. This film marks the return of the Star Wars franchise to the big screen after a 7-year absence since The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Despite leading the domestic box office last week, the film directed by Jon Favreau only grossed approximately $98 million after its opening weekend. This figure makes Mando and Baby Yoda's adventure the lowest-grossing opening weekend film in the Star Wars era under Disney's management. The film's three-day weekend grossed $81 million, even lower than the 2018 box office flop Solo: A Star Wars Story ($84.4 million).

However, analysts believe that this result is not entirely a disastrous failure for Disney and Lucasfilm. Unlike previous installments that typically cost over $250 million, "The Mandalorian and Grogu" was produced on a relatively modest budget of around $165 million. This means the pressure to recoup the investment is lower.

In addition, viewer feedback is a solid foundation for the film. Mainstream audiences, especially families with children, reacted very positively, with an A- rating on CinemaScore and a high rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.
