The Fall of the Generation That Was Considered 'Fashionable' in the Last Century

Zing NewsZing News08/05/2023

Yuppies were popular in the 1980s and then declined in the early 1990s, partly due to the effects of the stock market crash.

Yuppie /ˈjʌp·i/ (noun): (rough translation) Young, successful urbanites

Define:

According to Britannica , yuppie is short for "young urban professional" or "young upwardly mobile professional", a term that was widely used in the 1980s to describe young college-educated workers. They were often part of the American baby boomer generation and worked in high-paying jobs in large cities.

The term first appeared in Chicago Magazine in 1980, in an article by journalist Dan Rottenberg, talking about the growing number of people moving to trendy neighborhoods in Chicago. However, journalist Dan Rottenberg said he did not coin the term yuppie.

At the time, interest in young, wealthy, successful professionals was growing. Newsweek called 1984 "the year of the yuppie," noting that this generation was influential in America's economic and political landscape.

In the media, yuppies are often portrayed as career-minded, materialistic, self-interested, and are said to be financially conservative but politically liberal.

When yuppies moved to big cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco a century ago, critics said they perpetuated gentrification, a term that refers to the influx of middle- and upper-class residents into urban areas that drives up real estate and commodity prices and forces many people to leave because they can no longer afford rent.

By 1991, Time magazine reported the "death of the yuppie", partly due to the stock market crash of 1987. Although no longer as popular as before, yuppie is still sometimes used in the 21st century to refer to successful young urbanites.

Uses of yuppie in English:

- My monthly salaries ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 yuan, are much lower than those of the yuppies.

Translation:My monthly salary ranges from 1,000 to 4,000 yuan, much lower than that of young, successful urban people.

- Yuppies tend to be educated with high-paying jobs, and they live in or near large cities.

Translation: Young, successful urbanites are often educated and well-paid, living in or near large cities.
