At 7am, one day in early August, we arrived at Ham Tu wharf, Quy Nhon fishing port to go to Cu Lao Xanh and easily caught the bustling atmosphere here, many tourists were happily checking in at the wharf before departure. Sitting on the canoe, watching the surrounding scenery, enjoying the wonderful feeling when the canoe glided on the sea. 30 minutes passed quickly and Cu Lao Xanh island gradually appeared before our eyes.

In the distance, you can see the sea areas along the island beautifully decorated to serve tourism . Walking around the island, Nhon Chau is bustling with trading activities, refreshment stalls along the cool banyan tree roots. Many stalls sell dried seafood such as fish, squid, seaweed, fish sauces... There are also many motels, spacious and comfortable homestays.

10 years ago, Cu Lao Xanh was little known, even to those in Binh Dinh province. It is an island commune, surrounded by the sea, 24 km southeast of Quy Nhon city and 12 km northeast of Phu Yen province. People on the island mainly live on fishing and aquaculture. Their livelihoods are precarious because they are always affected by storms, high tides, and transportation is very difficult. But since the national grid was connected in August 2020, the lives of people on Cu Lao Xanh island have gradually improved. Every day, canoes carrying tourists dock and shipments from the mainland are sent to the island.

Mr. Tran Van Mon, 77 years old, Chairman of the Elderly Association in Nhon Chau, said that in the past, the commune used electricity from a diesel generator station, which only generated electricity for 12 hours a day, so it could not fully meet the electricity needs of the people. Since the national grid has been installed, the people on the island are extremely excited. In addition to the convenience in daily life, tourism services have been able to develop. Tourism has developed, the demand for seafood consumption has increased, so the exploitation, farming and processing of seafood by the people in the commune has also developed more than before. Since then, the material and spiritual life of the people has been increasingly improved.

According to the report of Nhon Chau Commune People's Committee, the locality has 136 vehicles (boats, baskets) participating in aquatic exploitation, each year maintaining the exploitation of about 450 tons of fish and squid of all kinds; 48 households, with 129 cages, 26 rafts, raising 10,700 lobsters and fish, squid of all kinds, income from aquaculture is estimated at 7.5 billion VND/year. In addition, local aquatic product processing activities are also developing, annually producing about 1,100 kg of fish sauce, 1,320 liters of fish sauce; 2,350 kg of fish cakes and other types of dried and packaged aquatic products, estimated income of about 3.5 billion VND/year. Currently, Nhon Chau Aquatic Products Cooperative is promoting the production of Cu Lao Xanh fish cakes to supply markets in and outside the province. This is a local key product that has been certified as a 3-star OCOP by the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province and is a provincial-level rural industrial product in 2022.

Tourism has developed, people have bought new canoes to transport tourists from the mainland to the island and vice versa, so traveling is more convenient. The traffic system in the commune has been invested, upgraded and expanded completely with 14.38 km of village roads (100%) concreted, 9.62 km of alleys and 11 km of roads around the island hardened. The breakwater has been solidly built to protect the residential area facing the sea against high tides.

Mr. Nguyen Ha Lao, born in 1985, who runs a tourism service business in the commune, said that Nhon Chau has both sea, mountains, and forests with pristine beauty, so more and more tourists are coming to the island. It is estimated that during the tourist season, the island welcomes about 300-500 visitors/day. Accordingly, the islanders have also started doing tourism according to the criteria of green - clean - beautiful. Along with that, the cultural house, market and waste treatment area ensure environmental hygiene... making people's lives better and better. Village roads and alleys also have more trees and murals, ensuring the standards of bright - green - clean - beautiful. Various types of cultural, artistic and sports activities are organized regularly, improving the spiritual life of the islanders.

In addition, the project to build fresh water tanks for all families on the island commune has also been implemented. Investment has been made in healthcare , and good doctors have been sent to the island to take care of people’s health and examine them. With such concerns, everyone will feel secure staying at sea, and generations will build their lives together.

Mr. Ho Nhat Le, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, shared that in the coming time, Nhon Chau commune will promote the development and improve the quality of accommodation facilities in the area; encourage the development of community tourism models associated with the livelihoods of coastal fishing village people, making this type of service a strength, a unique cultural identity of Nhon Chau commune tourism; support people to develop homestay accommodation services and other types of accommodation in the community associated with the preservation of coastal fishing village architecture to serve the development of community tourism. In addition, the commune also focuses on the issue of environmental protection and natural resources. Currently, Nhon incinerator is in the process of completion, and when it is put into operation, it will help Nhon Chau better handle domestic waste in the locality.

It is known that Nhon Chau island commune is striving to build an advanced new countryside, expected to reach the finish line in 2024. In a particularly important strategic position in the sea border area, as a sea outpost commune of Binh Dinh province and Quy Nhon city, recognized by Military Region 5 and the Military Command of Binh Dinh province as a key commune in terms of national defense and security, Nhon Chau has truly been, is and continues to innovate to develop sustainable livelihoods associated with firmly protecting the sovereignty and security of the sea and islands.
