“Think before you throw away”

“Think before you throw” is the line printed prominently on each trash can placed in front of each classroom at Tran Quoc Toan Primary School (Xuan Khanh Ward, Ninh Kieu District). That is also the message the school’s teachers send to students: classify trash, protect the environment, for a green planet.

Ms. Ngo Thanh Thao, Head Teacher, guides students in using the trash bin.

The project "Classified trash bins" is being implemented at Tran Quoc Toan Primary School and has received consensus and support not only from students but also from teachers and parents. Each trash bin is the size of a cabinet with a very beautiful and neat design. The trash bin is divided into 3 compartments, used to store different types of trash: organic trash, inorganic trash and recyclable trash. Each compartment has vivid illustrations and words, helping students easily recognize and classify and dispose of trash in the right place. Each compartment has a small lid for trash and a large lid to take out the trash inside when full, designed like a closed door, both ensuring aesthetics and preventing odors. The flip-top lid of this trash bin also helps users avoid direct contact with trash and unpleasant odors.

In addition, the trash cans are made of durable materials with a lifespan of about 10 years, ensuring savings and efficiency. Ta Bao Nhu Phuc, a 4th grade student, said that not only he but also his classmates in the school classified trash according to the teachers' instructions. Phuc said: "This is very meaningful, protecting the environment and making the school campus cleaner, more beautiful and safer."

Ms. Huynh Thi Xuan Lan, Principal of Tran Quoc Toan Primary School, said: Implementing the guidance on classifying domestic solid waste at source of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the direction of the Ninh Kieu District People's Committee and the District Department of Education and Training, the Board of Directors has directed the School's Union to carry out the project "Classified trash bins". Each class will be equipped with a classified trash bin of the same specifications, from socialized funding. As soon as it was launched, the school received support and consensus from parents and philanthropists. To date, 35/38 trash bins have been put into use, with a total value of nearly 122.5 million VND. "Through this model, the school hopes to educate students on how to classify trash and be aware of protecting the environment, integrating into the world's "green living" trend. At the same time, ensuring hygiene and environmental friendliness, decorating the school landscape", Ms. Xuan Lan shared.

Since the trash bins were installed, students have become more aware of trash classification and environmental protection. Nguyen Le Kha Ngan, a fourth grader, said: “The teachers often remind me to classify trash and keep the environment clean. I find this very meaningful, and when I get home, I also classify trash in my family.”

Of course, equipping trash bins is not all that is needed to form a “green living” consciousness in students. But this model is like a catalyst, a motivation for students to be more aware of throwing away trash. On each trash bin in the classroom, students also place ornamental plants to make the space more beautiful.Educating students to love nature and protect the environment is integrated into each lesson by teachers at Tran Quoc Toan Primary School. During the flag salute, the head teacher also propagates and mobilizes students to raise awareness and create a friendly and clean living environment. The school also established cleaning teams for each class, equipped with tools to pick up trash during recess and maintain general hygiene.

According to Ms. Ngo Thanh Thao, the teacher in charge of the General Department, before the project "Classified trash bins" was implemented, the school had a model of a small Planning House. The students would collect plastic bottles and newspapers, ensuring hygiene and being able to sell them, raising funds to implement small plans such as rewarding students who participate in cleaning, supporting students in difficult circumstances... Each class also implemented green spaces, planting ornamental flowers in the classroom and in front of the hallway. In particular, the model of the Union Vegetable Garden has been implemented for many years, always being well cared for and green. This is a place for students of all classes to experience, learn and, most of all, nurture in each student a love of green trees, a spirit of work and beautifying green nature.

Our grandparents taught us: “Bend the tree when it is young/ Teach your children when they are still innocent”. The lessons right from school about the spirit of loving nature and protecting the environment through practical models of Tran Quoc Toan Primary School are very meaningful. From there, students will become responsible children and later will become citizens with awareness and responsibility for the environment, a foundation for global citizenship in the 4.0 era.
