The power of humanistic journalism

The work "Alluvium will heal the wounds of the Northwest mountains and forests" by the group of authors Van Tung - Nguyen Hai, Vietnam Law Newspaper, won the Encouragement Prize.

The article is the feelings of the reporters of Phap Luat Viet Nam during a working trip to people in Lao Cai and some northern mountainous provinces affected by storm No. 3 in 2024.

“Alluvium will heal the wounds of the Northwest mountains and forests” is a clear testament to the qualities of journalists with kind hearts and a profound humanistic perspective on harsh realities.

The article opens with a contrast between the golden memories of the Northwest and the ruined reality in Lang Nu, delicately portrayed with a refined emotion. The writer does not run after the pain, but as a companion, quietly listens to the boy's cries, the hopeless calls for his mother under the banana tree - a precious and haunting image.

“Who are you waiting for?” – “Mom.” Not a single tear, only lonely red eyes – that silence was the loudest cry.

Here, the journalist does not describe the tragedy with ostentation, but with patient, thoughtful language - showing understanding and respect for the dignity of the person suffering loss.

The article does not shy away from pain. Images such as “drifting bodies”, “mud covering the road”, “open wounds in the mountains and forests”… are portrayed realistically and thornily. However, the author’s perspective does not stop at anger or regret, but opens up a journey of escape, with the timely verse: “Vietnam from blood and fire/ Shakes off the mud to stand up and shine brightly”.

The article is tragic, but not pathetic, because the tragedy goes hand in hand with light – the light of humanity, of hope, of caring between people who have never met.

As a journalist, the writer not only goes, records, and tells, but also spreads a beautiful gesture of a journalist: sharing and acting. The image of Editor-in-Chief Vu Hoai Nam venturing into the flood area to truly “feel with his heart the suffering of the people”.

“Journalists need to witness the pain with their own eyes and feel with their hearts the suffering of the people,” said Editor-in-Chief Vu Hoai Nam, a humane declaration of journalism, placing the human heart above all career and words.

The author of the article leads the reader from sorrow to hope with a very tight emotional structure:

From the extreme sadness in Lang Nu; to the calm reflection when looking at the mud covering the fields; Warm movement through images of relief and sharing; Ending with faith - with images of children's smiles, the "red hearts" of reporters, and the restless convoy.

A member of the jury shared on the sidelines: "The author has been very successful in finding life in loss, humanity in desolation, light in ruins - and that is the greatest strength of humanistic journalism.

The writing possesses a simple, poetic language but is not far from reality. The descriptions of nature and people always balance the sharpness of journalism with the lyricism of literature, making the reader feel like they are living the story, not simply reading a field report.

This is a beautiful article – beautiful in the truth reflected by sincere emotions, beautiful in the spirit of journalism dedicated to the community, and beautiful in the undying faith in humanity and the future."

“Alluvium will heal the wounds of the Northwest mountains and forests” is not just a record, but a quiet epic, talking about tears, about mud, but in the end, it is still life – rising from the wounds themselves. The journalist in the article is not only doing his job, but is living his job to the fullest – with a heart that is still on fire.”

The 16th Lao Cai Press Awards received nearly 200 entries in print, photo, radio, television and online journalism categories. After the preliminary round, 139 entries qualified for the preliminary judging round in journalism categories.

According to the Organizing Committee's assessment, the topics and genres of works participating this year are more diverse; many authors and groups of authors have invested carefully in content and expression; many multimedia works are of high quality; including many works fighting against negativity and praising good people and good deeds in many fields.

In the spirit of fairness and objectivity, 48 works of 5 types of journalism by authors and groups of authors proposed that the Standing Committee of the Provincial Emulation and Reward Council submit to the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee to award prizes according to regulations.
